I'm so glad that a successful formula has been achieved with steam on the South Devon main line. Any chance of a blue King making an appearance? Let's not be greedy; maybe in 2012, but meanwhile very happy to enjoy KE1, DoG and Tornado in 2011. Early bird discounts are being offered for some earlier trips.

As long as its vacuum braked, the short answer is no. I'm sure companies that use WCR will do something similar, if not better.

This year is,I think going to be a tough one for the Torbay Express. If you look at the runs nearly every week-end there is another tour based around or picking up at Bristol which seem to be in direct competition.Even on the same day, the Weymouth Seaside Express could not be more "in the face" of the TE and at £20 is cheaper than the TE for a standard ticket.
For me you cant beat a proper GW engine with a rake of chocolate and cream coaches on the sea wall but with the present economic climate I hope the tour companies dont suffer.
What would happen if 6023 was on the Weymouth up against 6024 on the TE????

Yes, let's hope Torbay Express are making the most of the sea wall views in their marketing.

Though I see that the Weymouth Seaside Express is still making use of, let's say, less than authentic photos for their 2011 publicity - ie pics of the Steam Dreams 2010 "Cornish Riviera Express" with King, Castle and chocolate and cream rake....... boo hiss

I'd much rather see 6024, 6023 and a Castle on the TE. The only chance of that happening are if WCR were to operate the train. Nothing against DBS or TE Ltd... I just feel that if WCR were to do it we'd get a more vaied pool of locos, it might even be a tad cheaper too.

I see RTC have a Hall and a Castle going from Bristol to Kingswear in October. The train starts in Poole, has 2 locos on the front and is only £14 more expensive. Shame its in October though!

Let's support steam to both Kingswear and Weymouth. This is a year when bums on seats will really count!

DBS policy really does limit what your able to do unfortunatly and it's quite sad that 6024 apart that GWR is pretty much barred from the itinery as a result, i know 5029 was said would have to work quite hard with the current loadings and timings, but is dropping a coach in the early or late season when demand is not so high not an option ?, such a shame that Castle & Hall outings in Devon are limited to the occasional RTC or Vintage Trains outing.

Oh, OK I see. So, we need some more cooperation in the industry then? - over to you owners/operators. Get talking and lets see a proper collection of Swindon products down in Devon.

Much as I would love to see a Castle on the TE again (5029 is air braked remember) I have to say 71000 is an excellent alternative. Both runs I, or my son, went on last year were awesome, no other word for it.

Does anyone know whether the usual load will be 11 coaches again this year? I notice it is booked a stop at Torquay this year which may be a challenge on the return....

What is the gradient? The 2-8-0 tanks on the PDSR can take 9 from a standing start at Goodrington up 1 in 70 steepening to 1 in 60 all the way to Churston so 11 should be OK for 71000? (and don't forget 5239 once hauled 11 plus Tangmere in "moist" weather from a standing start at Waterside!)

The line gradient from Goodrington to Churston is 1-71 for just over a mile and then 1-60 for the remainder.
On the return, the gradient from Kingswear Crossing Halt to Greenway tunnel is at 1-66 easing to 1-75 soon after the tunnel.
The main climb will be the first mile from Torquay to Torre which is at 1-55 followed by another mile of 1-73 to the summit.
A 2-8-0 tank is an ideal loco for steeply graded hill starts where as a 4-6-2 Pacific is not.
A 4-6-2 Pacific is an ideal loco for continual high power in the 70 to 80 mph range ..... a 2-8-0 tank is not. <BJ>

Indeed...a standing start on 1 in 55 for a mile at Torquay then 1 in 73 for a further mile to the top. A wet day and a Pacific with load 12 would be pushing it a bit IMO....
