    Due to the demise of Fotopic, I have created a new Flickr gallery including many never seen before photographs from my collection. Hopefully you can check it out;

Though I assume it is accurate now, is the choice of name wise given what inevitably happens; you grow up, get fat, lose your hair and become a grumpy old man like the rest of us?

    Nice photo Lewis!

Now let me guess - the location was near the over bridge at Edstaston / Quina Brook.
Along the field access track to be more precise? NGR: SJ533327

I'm guessing you also arrived on a white push bike?

I took a break from nutting up crown stays to see it pass through North Shrops. as well:

I might have tried a slightly wider shot - but there was a bicycle lying in the middle of the farm track a short way ahead of me!! Lol

I had a look at both, which are nicely shot regarding correct shutter speed and good colour but could the composition have been different? Both feel that they've been heavily cropped or taken from a very tight location?

Cheers, yeah I have cropped this image, but I have a wider one at the same location in my Flickr gallery which I personally prefer

    Thanks,
    Lewis

    Lol.
Don't worry. I only popped out for a quick snap, not really in serious photo mode today - too busy with other things. Although it's worth remembering the sun's angled quite nicely along that bit during the morning :), just a shame it's downhill! :eek:hwell:

I've just had a look at your Flikr, have to say I prefer your middle shot of the three. :)

I'm not particularly fussed by mine; I was somewhat caught out by it arriving a bit early! I wasn't really intending to use such a long focal length, I was still musing over framing when I noticed it approaching, so just grabbed a snap!

Yeah it is a good stretch of line, many good locations can be accessed.

    Thanks, yeah mine too :)

Its turned out pretty good though, sometimes a bit of 'spontaneity' is a good thing

Some very good photos, wish I could have that skill, and when I was younger!

Went out to see 48151 working to Shrewsbury ready for the mainline tour tomorrow. Due to the lack of light and fact that the 8f came upon us almost silently, it was very much a rushed shot, yet I am relatively pleased with the result...

Lol, I got a similar one too! ;)

Must admit the sun putting in an appearance shortly before it's arrival left me wondering if I should have loaded up the proper camera, but the good 'ol British weather didn't fail us - clouds swiftly returned to justify just going for a quick snap!!

Nice to put a face to a name. :)

Haha, no it didn't, the light before hand though was brilliant :)

I was so worried I had got into your way, but had no time to move back as she was so quiet when approaching us, didn't even get a video lol :p

    Cheers,

No probs, you were by the tripod so well out of the way.

Yeah, that location is bloomin' useless for seeing the train approaching: Downhill with no view along the line! I just thought I heard the rails start to briefly 'sing' moments before it appeared beyond the trees!

Up on the bridge you can see all the way through to the other side of Prees station, with care you can even see when the level crossing gates drop a few moments before the train comes into view!

Fingers crossed for bright sun tomorrow - I'll see (and hear) it climbing uphill then, so no last minute suprises. Lol.

To be honest, Ian's is better but both are rather uninspiring. Both are just spotter shots, I'm not sure what kind of meaning either conveys.

Does it matter that they are both 'uninspiring'? I'm simply glad I got some sort of a result despite the weather, which displays my day's activities and that is all I wanted it to do...I for one am happy with it, therefore it's a success from my point of view.

Why do you go and photograph steam engines? Is it not to create something beautiful?

I photograph steam locomotives because I am an enthusiast with a camera...of course, if the weather isn't on your side then you won't get something beautiful, but you can try, and that's how i've achieved some shots which I think are beautiful.

My definition of 'beautiful' may vary to yours, but that's a matter of opinion and taste in photography
