Haunted? Why do you say that? I hope not because I live just by there.

Also, it's Conington not Connington. Not that it's really so close to the village of Conington, more like Woodwalton.

So Tangmere is staying overnight. If she is still here when it gets light I'll be able to see her from my house. She's a bit further forward in the siding than the usual watering location so I'll have an even better view.

Oh dear oh dear. Seems that once a problem appears it just gets worse, whatever efforts are made. Assume we will get a full picture in due course, but from the posts, it has been a very difficult time for crews of Tangmere and the diesel support besides of course the passengers. No doubt now, they can get back quickly with no further stops (obviously not water etc) .

Can't add much to above except that on arrival at Lincoln where I was on the overbridge there was not much more than sweepings in the tender, perhaps a cwt at most. Loch Ranoch was NOT running and Tangmere pushed the train (12 on incl suport coach ) back into Grt Northern Trc sideings.

What a delay. By the timings, eta Basingstoke 03.00. Nasty. i've just noticed that there are loads of scheduled station stops, assume they were pick up points, but asssume the diesel will pick up a lot of time on the scheduled 5hrs Peterborough to Basingstoke ??? !!! On what we know, its a VERY late one.

The village is Conington but the railway have always referred to it as Connington. Same as Whittlesea/Whittlesey and Harringay/Haringey, plus many others.

Enough pedantry. Shame about 34067. Pity the poor passengers who probably won't be getting back to Woking until 2am tomorrow.

It seems that you're correct. I have found official references to signalboxes at Connington North and Connington South - when local signalboxes still existed. I guess that in the distant past someone connected to the railway mis-spelled it and it stuck.

I'm not sure that Whittlesey/Whittlesea is quite the same. I think that Whittlesea is an old spelling of the town that we now know as Whittlesey, probably related to Whittlesea Mere, now drained.

No-one seems to know about Woodwalton just a bit further down. It is referred to randomly as Woodwalton or Wood Walton on maps, sign posts, and various other places. I live there and I don't know which is correct.

Tangmere was given a new estimated arrival time of 15.15, ended up spending 30 mins stuck at Metheringham (about 10 miles south of Lincoln) and arrived at Lincoln at 16.20. The locomotive was a matter of metres from the Brayford Wharf East Crossing before reversing where I lost sight of the train. The new scheduled departure time from Lincoln was 17.20.

Tangmere looks great with her nameplates and both sets of RAF crests (the nameplate ones and cab ones) again. A shame that its been another bad day for the loco. Mind you those I feel sorry for those passengers who started at Woking and Basingstoke if they are going to get home at 2:00am and were expecting steam for the whole journey.

I agree, I liked the British and RAF Flag at the front of the locomotive. Must be very frustrating considering it took 8 hours to get from Basingstoke to Lincoln.

Finally back from what was a rather long day but overall enjoyable day out. The tour started off well with the passing of 35028 at Feltham Jn but once on the ECML everything seemed to fall apart. Lengthy stops of 45 mins just south of St Neots and 30 mins just north of Metheringham were made to resolve the issue with 37676. Arrival into Lincoln was 2.5 hrs late with a revised departure time of 17.30. This came and went and we finally set off just under 2hrs down with a further 10 mins lost on arrival at Connington Loop where 34067 was declared a failure. 47500 worked the train back south via Peterborough with arrival into Basingstoke at 01.28, 2 hrs and 28 mins down.
No doubt a day like this will put a number of customers off travelling again. A very long day out coupled with the fact of there being little time at the destination is not what they want. Hopefully today doesn’t turn many away from travelling again.
Hope the messages I sent through Railtour Live were helpful to those on the lineside. It certainly is handy service for tours like today!

I don't really want to join the usual chorus of disapproval of diesels being stuck on the back of steam trains but I am slightly puzzled as to what the operational reason was for having one there yesterday was. Another recent tour to Lincoln had a diesel since it was needed in turning the train on the triangle but if I've got my facts right yesterday's tour arrived from the Sleaford direction and departed towards Newark meaning that no turning of loco or train should have been required. Was it there as an insurance against Tangmere failing? If so it seems to have caused more problems than it solved. If it wasn't required could it not have been dropped off at an earlier point rather than dragged all the way to Lincoln?

Given the failure of Tangmere later it was lucky that 47500 was in the area otherwise the delay could have been even longer. I suppose in BR days things were easier in that you could just summon a diesel from the local depot to assist in cases of failure but a small operator like West Coast is hardly going to have a fleet of strategically placed diesels sitting around just in case.

She's still here at CoNNington siding with the fire lit. Just had a chat to the guys who are with her. They were having a great run yesterday apart from the diesel holding them back. Until the hot bearing. Now they are waiting for a bearing from Swindon and some jacks from Carnforth, and hoping to depart this afternoon some time.

On another forum "second leading axle" was mentioned. I take this to mean the rear axle of the leading bogie.
