But what is the state of play with the roof as of now please? The above "update" doesn't really tell us very much. Does anyone have any recent images please, beyond the ones seen on the nymr unofficial website.

    NYMR-style "Mudlines" anyone......?

    Thanks

Progress will not be as visually stunning as getting the steelwork up (which only took about a week) for a while, if really ever quite so much visible progress in such a short time again at all!

The current works have eben adding timber lats and then a timber covering to the roof, which was progressing well when I last saw it but will take some days.

Don't know how this will work - I have reduced these pictures in size for the first time!

Pictures at Pickering today. Frame work in place as previous, work on temporary "crash deck" beneath the roof and permanent timber slatting above. I believ timber lining will start once crash deck is in place. Shop, Tea Room and Booking Office are all open despite the work!

As one wit said today "Don't think much of this new roof - it leaks and the underpinning is too low at the south end!"

also pictures of DMU and 60923 Joem - pretty busy today, DMU nearly full and Teaks behind Joem full and standing!

Steven: Thanks for the update and images.

I guess someone has to ask this question, so here goes!: Will the timber slatting in the roof be treated with a fire retardant?

    Thanks.

Whatever the answer, I think an instruction has gone out that no locos are to come to a stand under the roof.
    Or something to that effect.

Does this not effectively prohibit double heading, in that in order not to come to a stand under the roof a single locomotive would have to foul the points at the end of the loop?

I should think it will be one of those rules that is only for 90% of the time. More of a guideline than a set in stone rule. I can't see them committing to banning double headers into Pickering on gala weekends.

Would it be possible for some sort of smoke deflector to be put up? To stop the sparks getting into the wood. Or is that just a tired suggestion that will seem stupid when I recover from work?

Probably issued by someone who doesn't know where the Stop board is located!

What "Stop Board" - it has gone - remember what it used to hand from!

New arrangements will be in force from when trains can run under the roof.

There were plenty of roofs, including Pickering's for over 100 years, that had timber lining and steam locos operating under them without regular outbreaks of fire - having repairers up on your overall roof wasn't always so fortune, as BR discovered at Newcastle a few years ago!

Wouldn't it be rather poor firing to have sparks coming from a loco that was more or less at rest?

Though if it stops under the roof it does then have to move away again :p

I know the Moors is steeply graded in places but it's hardly going to be full 2nd valve with 70% cut-off is it? ;-)

The most likely problem will be if 60007's safety valves blow! That could be a case of 60007 1 - roof 0.

The board may have gone, but the fooling point hasn't moved. It will still have to be protected somehow.

Whatever the finer points of operation may be in the future, surely an engine running round uses just a touch of steam and is unlikely to emit any sparks, particularly to be thrown that far up into the roof? Presumably firing a round and putting the blower on would be bad practice anyway.

Edit: At last, some images of the Pickering work in progress from the main NYMR website:
