How about a week with red wheels then, look rather nice with the wartime black. You could rename her Flying Dutchman for the occasion and run special trips from Europe to see her :)

I love Apple Green but wartime black will certainly be different and I'm sure she'll look great.

I would have said stunning, the black livery will show off her racing pedigree to perfection - perfect for that profile picture:smile:

Quick question. Will she be in mat black or gloss black for war time livery?

    Sorry of asking

    Thanks

I'm no expert on locomotive paint but I imagine the black will be a matt finish as it will probably be used as a base for the apple green gloss finish which will be applied later. However, I would have thought that grey was a better colour (a la Tornado) for an undercoat for apple green. Like I said though, I'm no expert.
I liked the Duchess in black but to me 4472 should still have been preserved in a glass case at York in whatever colour and a new locomotive built instead.. mutter mutter!

To be fair Ian, I had the idea a while ago of the black at some point, but others have picked it up recently and run with it - so it's been a real team effort! I'll tell you who to buy pints for when I see you next...

An excellent idea and one which is in keeping with showing off the full history of Flying Scotsman.

Now then - who will pair it with 70000 in black? ;)

    Regards,

    Dan

Now now gentlemen! If you have all finished throwing your toys out of your prams just take a look from the other side.People in this industry seem to have short memories. What I have stated is my opinion only.If you add up what it has cost over the last few years including the loses to the people who made investments in it(many individuals)it runs into millions.I understand to many that it is an iconic locomotive, but I just think that the money could have been better off going to put other NRM engines back into steam or help out our heratage railways.Just 20% would put the GWSR chicken curve to rights, but what do I know.Oh by the way MR COLLETT does have an extra 't' but I'm not the great man am I.

Something which may have escaped your notice: the money given to the appeal isn't yours to decide what to do with, as with my own contributions to the SOS appeal (both save and steam) it's our decision to give as fans of the engine. You could say "it could have been better spent" in so many forms and variants it's unreal. People only give to those causes they feel passionately for - and it is extremely telling, in the hands of the national collection that so many have given money to seeing Flying Scotsman back on the mainline.

In other words - your commentary is wholly irrelevant and could be aimed at/applied at every single item of heritage in preservation.

EDIT: and for the record - while the appeal for the GWSR is certainly a worthy cause - you can't force people to give money to causes just on the grounds you think one is more important than another.

Giving donations is a purely personal thing, and should never be questioned at any level by anyone, in my opinion. If I choose to give to 4472, 60163, the GWSR, the GCR, the SKLR, and the Railway Children charity, that's my business and no one else's. To question where the overall sum of money of any preservation project "should go" is an insult frankly, to those who gave up their coppers for their respective causes.

WARNING: DO NOT FEED THE TROLL

Back to Flying Scotsman, I wonder if painting her black was part of the contract for the loco to be reassembled at Ian Riley's works! ;-)

    My apologies! :)

I know it's been suggested several times since Steve Davies was made head of the NRM - although I am certain there's a few notable people in amongst the NRM wanting to see something like this happen. A friend of mine did suggest this was on the cards back in August 2010, so to Tom, I can only say I owe you a pint chap!!!

Fair play to Anthony for coming up with this, the double chimney, while not technically accurate is bearable, it's the deflectors that ruin Pre BR colours asthetically for me, is there a programme or list anywhere pointing at what 4472 will do while in this livery ? i'd like to think it will visit a railway or two in it rather than just potter up and down at York as this would definetly be worth a trip up north.

At the risk of being banned for repeating myself, paint it LNER green, keep the double chimney, borrow Tornado's deflectors and renumber/name it as LNER 2751 "Humorist". (Oooh for a GN tender!)

    I agree.

And for anyone who doesn't like it - it's only for the steam trials! She will be back in Aplle Green for her mainine tours!
