Arrived in Crewe some 15 minutes after the due departure time, problem with fire clinkering, and just heard that the problem has arisen again near Lichfield and they are some 50 minutes down. I appears that the coal taken on a Preston is 'not of the best quality'. That was one description, I think there may be others a bit more colourful.

Was over 1 hr down at Atherstone, had to give up the shot due to lack of light and train - may have been leaving as we packed up if my ears didn't deceive me.

Stopped for a blow up at Armitage according to Alberta. I saw the tour trundle through Stafford. I really don't know why I bothered pressing the shutter!

My thoughts are with the crew as they battle to get this train back to London - long way still to go with that duff coal.

A mate has just told me it's some 90 minutes down towards the southern end of the Trent Valley.

Re: Tornado on the "Christmas Coronation" today (Day 3)

I'm sure that the fire would have been cleaned out each night before putting her to bed so the fact that it was the third day is not really relevant.

I've just read on one of the Yahoo groups that the A1 has given up at Rugby and the train may be caped there. Don't know much more than that though I'm afraid.

Shame to hear of the problems late in the tour; from my lineside eye this nevertheless looks like a very strong contender for tour of the year. Penrith to Shap in 14 minutes according to the updates (many thanks to the person/people providing these timely messages) - don't tell me she beat the Duchess' 7 week old record? Complete contempt shown for Beattock too.

Thanks Steve. I think we can take that pretty much as gospel and assume all the passengers are jumping on service trains back home. A shame indeed to have such a problem towards the end of this mammoth tour. Oh well, maybe I'll make the pub by 7 after all )

Thanks for the info. Jack - I agree that 30mph over the top with a trailing load of 13 carriages is a superb achievement.
