Amongst the records on my ”carefully constructed” UK NG database, I have a record of yet another loco about which I know very little:

Ferndale 21 (2001) 0-4-0T OC 2 ft. gauge, belonging to Leander Architectural of Dove Holes, Derbys. and undergoing restoration/rebuild. Ferndale are an engineering company in the greater Perth area of Western Australia.

It is allegedly based upon HK Porter 18635 of 1896. This is rather strange as Porter’s numbering didn’t go up to those levels. Their numbering for the period 1893-99 was 1500-1999. Presumably either the 3, 5, 6 or 8 are superfluous, so it could be 1635, 1835, 1863 or 1865. Porter built more 0-4-0 locos than any other wheel arrangement and of the 500 built in this period, 340 were 0-4-0s.
Leander’s website states “In 2007, we have continued restoration of a WW1 steam locomotive”. Are they referring to the Porter/Ferndale? If so the dates are odd! Or have they something else?
They also state, “Several Irish locomotives are due to arrive in 2008.” Did this happen and if so what are/were they?
Is anyone out there in possession of any answers or further info on the loco(s) in question? I would be very interested to gain any insight into this/these matters, as it’s all new to me.
As always, I would be extremely grateful for any enlightenment.

This probably refers to Kerr Stuart 3014

Not in 2008 AFAIK. Keef 9 and MR 9543 arrived from Klasmann-Deilmann, Co Westmeath, in April 2010.

    Thank you, Ken.

I have 3014 down as owned by a private consortium comprised of Moseley Trust members and located in Whaley Bridge. Is this still the case with loco parts are being worked on at Leander? Has ownership changed, as the Leander website talks about "our" WW1 loco, or is it just a complicated ownership situation?

I did wonder if the Irish connection concerned ex-peat line locos, so your confirmation is v. helpful and keeps that query off my 'steam' db.

    Gratefully,

    Ian

My notes have KS 3014 ex Gloddfa Ganol to Dorothea Restorations, Whaley Bridge, in 1998, then moving to Leander Architectural at Dove Holes circa 2002. I'm pretty certain the whole loco moved, not just bits. I can't really comment on ownership, as far as I'm aware it belongs to Moseley Railway Trust.

Back to the Ferndale Loco. You describe it as "based upon HK Porter 18635 of 1896"; I have it as "based on a H K Porter style loco" and fitted with a fictitious worksplate reading H K Porter 18635 of 1896. It is a very small loco, (cylinders are 3.75 x 5), I doubt if it weighs two tonnes - did Porter build anything that small?

OK Ken, I've finally sussed it.

Why this loco is listed as Ferndale 21, I do not know. Presumably it was bought from Ferndale Engineering or they built it for Tingle & Watson, as it is better known as T & W 'Phoenix', the replica Porter 0-4-0 that was imported for the Derbyshire Dales Narrow Gauge Railway in 2006 and was the subject of a thread (Porter 0-4-0 replica) on this forum in March last year. Is the Derbys. Dales NGR operating? I don't seem to be able to find any up to date info on it

The other loco is definitely KS3014. I had obviously missed any reference to its movement to Leander. The ownership is I believe a consortium of Moseley members and I believe it is intended for it to return to Apedale for operation. It was supposed to be ready this year but I can't find any recent reference to its progress.

Many thanks for your time & trouble. It's taken another couple of queries off my list.

The only other 'major' point niggling at me is the Roanoke Engineering VBT that was? at Trevaylor Farm/Quenchwell in Cornwall. Is this the same beast as Chris Parmenter's 'Perseverance' which is or was, I believe at Launceston?

Perhaps someone can enlighten me on that one as well.

    Once again, thank you!

    The simple answer is no!

The Roanoke VBT is on the Trevaylor Tramway whilst Perseverance is at Launceston (or it was when I last saw it on Monday!). The obvious differences between the two are that the Roanoke tram has coupling rods and side water tanks, whilst 'Percy' is chain driven and with a water tank on the front. If you can get hold of photos of both you will be able to see this.

Those who like all things vertical boilered may be interested to know that Perseverance is currently on around Mk4 of a developing design, having been rebuilt last winter with a new chassis, and recently (last week) fitted with brakes for the first time! The next development that Chris Parmenter is looking at is fitting an injector, as an alternative to the hand pump currently fitted.

The Roanoke tram is likely to visit Launceston at some point in the future - may not be for a while though as there are other visiting locomotives lined up this year and next.

    Kind regards

    Charlie

    Thank you very much, Charlie.
I did suspect that they were different but I've only just come across an oldish picture of the Roanoake beast and have later photos of 'Perseverence'. Knowing that this had been rebuilt several times, I wasn't sure if one had 'morphed' into the other.
Rather glad about this; I'm quite fond of VBTs. The more the merrier.
Should get one of the 'two footer brigade' to propose a VBT festival somewhere accessable.

Lets see, operational, or nearly so, are Chaloner, Taffy, Paddy, Leary, Perseverance, the Roanoke, another 2' gauge one that visited the FR for quirks and curiosities, and IIRC another Keefybuild, though I'm not too sure about the last one. Static are Kathleen at Aberystwyth, George Henry at Tywyn, Pendyffryn at Pant, the vertical boilered Lister at Rich Morris' place in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Watkin at Penrhyn Castle, Llanfair at Dinas and the sad remains of Penmaen somewhere on a hillside. All bar the last 3 are 2' gauge nominal. Nominations for a) methods of extraction from museums / hillsides and b) a host below, please. :)

As far as miniatures are concerned, I know of two at the Echills Wood Railway, one of which is mine, neither of which are currently operational, but could be made so without too much effort....

I'm also not sure about the second 'Keefybuild' but the other at FR's Q&C was 'Iowarth', Chunk Barber of Bustagroup fame's construction and you've forgotten:
the Telford Tram, 'Swift' from the North Ings Farm Museum, 'Nutty' the 2'6" Sentinel that's destined for RailWorld and Mr Smith's de Winton that is hiding somewhere near Newbury, I believe, present state unknown. Then there's 'Redstone' which, I think. is also at Pant.

Have I forgotten anything? I would like to know.

There is a 7 1/4" at a private location near Lacock I do believe, and my Dad nearly bought a neigh-on perfect 7 1/4" version of Chaloner from a man in Hampshire, but unfortunately we were shafted...

    I do like vertical locos

Yes, I forgot Dave Potter's 'Coffee Pot' at Yaxham (under rebuild?)

I suspect that "another keefybuild" and the Telford Tram are one in the same?

I list the loco at Laycock, Wilts, as 1'9" gauge rather than miniature?

Another one for the list is the very dsm (frame only?) ex Jaywick "Sentinel" at Steeple Grange.

Its Lacock, not Laycock. I might be 1' 9" but I was under the impression it was much smaller then that

The location of the 7 1/4" OR 1' 9" VBT in Lacock. I THINK it is a Farm but I am not 100% sure by a long way.

I've had a look on Google Earth but can't see any sign of track.
The "missing locos" list show it as 0-4-0 VBT, 21" gauge & dated 1978. It appears that it has been shown/demo/rides? at local village fetes/shows. Have you ever seen it, Chris?

The 18" Jaywick loco of the Steeple Grange LR is apparently stored off-site at Tansley, which is about a mile east of Matlock. There is no reference to it on the Steeple Grange website. Does anyone know how much of it remains?. Ken seems to think it may only be the frame. Are there any photos of it anywhere?

Thanks to everyone who has put info my way on this thread.

Is it perhaps a bit intrusive to post this gentleman's home details on the web?
