What are your views of sticking privatised colour schemes on locos.
Personally I dont like locos carrying privatised liveries, they dont go with a rake of chocolate and cream colored MK1 coaches for a start. Secondly preserved railways are meant to be having an air of authenticity , I hardly think frieghtliner liveried class 47 matches! Also I prefer to see liveries at preserved railways which I dont have a living memory of seeing in normal service eg. BR blue. One thing that is ironic though is I do like locos in 1990s BR secter liveries.

If you own it, or a share in it, or helped restore it then you get to have a say in the colour.

Otherwise its up to those that have - as discussed every time this topic comes up.

It is becoming increasinly the case that some privatised liveries and some BR liveries are out of living memory for some rail enthusiasts though...I can only just about remember BR. Maybe even some classes of locomotives are more 'accurate' in privatised liveries then they would be in a BR livery they never historically carried. But at the end of the day, as Simon says, its up to whoever owns it!

This is one argument to preserving lots of each class of diesel - so one can be painted in each livery they used.

At least locos still use real paint. If you want to preserve a multiple unit, you'll also need to get hold of some spare adhesive vinyls to keep it looking smart.

Who is to say what is 'right' preservation, Privatisation liveries reflect the 'modern' railways and that designs from the age of steam are still working daily, if only the 9fs had that chance!

You have to be careful raising this sort of question as you get the stock reply "If you don't own it or work on it, you're not entitled to express an opinion about it." Happily film directors don't respond in a similar way when their work is reviewed. Imagine Woody Allen telling you you're not entitled to an opinion about one of his films unless you've either financed a film or worked on one! As far as I'm concerned if I've paid my money to see a film or ride a train, then I feel entitled to an opinion about it, and I'm also entitled decide not to spend my money if the film or loco doesn't appeal.
In practice this means that when the Swanage Rly had a nice traditional blue liveried diesel visiting last year, I went along and spent a packet. When they had a Class 50 in an unattractive to me livery (DRS I think) visiting this year, I gave it a miss. The reason is personal taste. I don't like Privatisation era liveries on BR locos. It's just a matter of taste, and that's mine for better or worse!

Well, each to their own opinion. Both sides have a point.

One of the purposes of painting something is to protect whatever is underneath!

I tend towards a relaxed attitude, and as long as the looc and whatever is hooked on look clean and smart, then OK. (provided there is not a real clash of strong colours / livery scheme)

Ideally, well, how do you decide what is right / appropriate??

Ultimately, I suppose the final say is likely to be from whoever is paying for the paint / applying it. And if someone feels that strongly about something - then I would suggest you get involved and fundraise to pay for what you do want. After all, a new coat of paint will be needed at some point for a vehicle in use! Livery also applies to whatever is on the hook! and similar remarks can be made about that.

Perhaps not the best film director to quote - given that is pretty much Woody Allens' view.

DRS livery 50? - I think someone was winding you up.

Not sure there's a right or wrong answer to this one, as Simon says at the end of the day it's the owners choice first and foremost, you'd like loco's to blend in with a period feel, but depending on the type that just isn't possible sometimes, and then there's some that will just look wrong no matter what you do - a 56 or 58 on passenger stock is wrong regardless of livery for example, same for 47's 37's etc which were mostly allocated freight duties.

Liveries, always a lively topic on Nat.Pres. My own opinion? "any livery you like". IIRC a team called Porterhouse had a purple coloured Deltic, I thought "that doesn't look right", but it went like stink and I would go a long way to see it again getting the hammer uphill. To me, it's what's underneath the paint that is important.

It was Porterbrook train leasing company who had Gordon Highlander painted in their corporate colours.

    My mate's wife works there.

Diesel liveries? I'm in the 'don't mind' camp personally.

    Humble Pie time!
    1. I agree that Woody wasn't the best example to use!
    2. OK, it was Load Haul not whatever I said!
    3. No criticism of the magnificent Swanage Railway was intended.

That's what comes of posting after consuming a bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc!
The point I was trying to make remains apposite though. Owners, volunteers, etc have every right to paint their locos etc in whatever livery they like. Of course they do! I also have the right to present or withdraw my custom according to my taste. Just as with deciding whether or not to see a film. Live and let live!

Like has been said before, it is up to the owners/restorers to decide. My personal view is that I like to see an authentic livery. I can only think of the 2 50s that are not in authentic liveries, but I feel they look good. At the end of the day, it is what is inside that is far more important. On the steam front, how about getting the red 8F painted into BR blue for a year in a few years time, as I thought it suited the steam engines that received it, and would be interested in seeing a big engine painted that way as they were still just in service when they changed to corporate blue. It has also been pointed out that most of the general public do not care, and for the enthusiast, it can mean an increase in visitors as it is something different, but some of course might decide to stay way. It would be interesting to see if the red 8F group had any figures to show if painting it red has had an increase or decrease, or no effect on numbers.

You now have to be nearly 100 years old to remember pre Grouping colours, but everyone seemingly wants to see "Flying Scotsman" as 4472 in Apple Green and not as 60103 in Brunswick Green which is authentic and as many people will have seen it working as.
Preservation is now not reopening a disused branch line, but is part of the nostalgia theme park busines.
"I dont like locos carrying privatised liveries, they dont go with a rake of chocolate and cream colored MK1 coaches for a start".
With the exception of 18000, we'd better get rid of all diesels and electrics from preserved lines then.
