Have a great day Colin, weather is looking good for saturday so instead of preparing 6024 for the journey to London you can have a paddle or an ice-cream, or even both!!!!
Shirley and I will be out with cam-corders either side of Frome water stop.

Whats wrong with a jar or three?? I notice D1015 is following the train back to Paddington so I assume its being used for the ECS move out of Paddington.

I'm on this one with Mrs GWR (she likes Westerns & 6024) we are in Coach F.
Will be getting on at Reading but book all the way to Paddington so I can get some pix of 6024 there.
As for the couple of pint's that has been talked about on here,
The 2 pub's I have been in at Minehead are the Hairy Dog on the left walking up from Minehead Station or the Queens Head in Holloway Street
which is turn right near Barclays Bank .
Looking at the weather seems it's going to be sunny so a beer or 2 sounds good to me.

There's a Wetherspoons at the top end of the Avenue, the Duke of Wellington, don't know what guest beers are on , but it'll be good value

  9. Just make sure you get on the right train at Minehead for your return trip - the train for Hastings will be in the Bay Platform (dep 3.10pm) and the London train in the Main (dep 3.40pm). Mind you, I think anyone should be able to tell the difference :)

    Enjoy your trip(s)

I was on this yesterday - for 1015 really - and I have to say I was a bit disappointed by the King's lack-lustre performance. 31 at Brewham and 69 downhill. Constant black smoke Taunton - Theale. After the Theale w.s. things impoved a bit, less black smoke and a bit sharper running. By the time I left it at Slough, it was blowing off and sounding not too bad, clear exhaust etc. I don't know what I was expecting, it had 11 on, but I wasn't impressed. Just my opinion you understand. :)

I saw it at Theale, it was blowing off as it arrived & during the water stop. Went to the farm crossing before the M4 to watch it pull away, as it approached the cylinder cocks were opened & it shut off for a few seconds then opened up again. It wasn't being worked very hard & could see black smoke as it disappeared under the motorway.

  15. Great pics of 6024 Keyham. Thanks!

As for the 31 on Brewham, I was not on the trip but out videoing and she was having to follow a previous service which meant that she was unable to give her usual excellent performance.

Last week southyorkshireman reported "spirited running all day" on the Torbay with the 'King' in exactly the same mechanical condition as it was yesterday and as it will be next week. Your regrettable disappointment is as much due to the variables, such as coal, schedule/path/other traffic, route restrictions (eleven 30mph. platform restrictions) etc. as the locomotive. We were extremely pleased with the economical and efficient driving of the locomotive despite some lengthy running under single yellow signals plus standing at reds.

Happily, after the right-time arrival at Paddington many passengers expressed to us what a good trip back they had had.

44713 - did you not observe that we were checked to walking pace through Castle Cary and then ran up Bruton under single yellows. Arrived on time at Padd.

I never expect much from trains operated by DBS crews. WCR Crews are much much better in my opinion, they know how to operate a steam loco and respect them.

From what I've both experienced and heard from various sources I would say my statement is fairly accurate. They can only handle wide firebox engines which are a lot easier than narrow firebox engines.
