    That's good to see a new firebox but, I note that it is all-welded and I don't think that the original was. As such, the existing stayholes in the outer wrapper will not be suitable for such a box.
    I've a soft spot for this loco as I was the last person to fire it, a long time ago, now.

    Suitable was probably not the best choice of word! Ideal,would have been better. Sorry. With a riveted box, the riveted lap joint provides some stiffness to the plate and the stay positions allow for this. If you have a welded joint, there is no lap joint and the staying needs to start nearer the radius. The outer wrapper will be drilled to suit the flanged box and not the welded one. This leaves the box poorly supported more or less at a point where the welded joint is going to be. Whilst there is no applicable British Standard the recognised formula for calculating plate support/stay size say that you take the support line as the start of the radius (for welded) or the centreline of the rivets for a riveted box. The reality is that it is probably marginal but it is not the best design.
    If you have a riveted steel box, that's a different story but I can't see anybody doing this, today.

    Here are a few pictures from the Russ Hillier photo charter at the Rutland Railway Museum on 18th March. Resident Ironstone Bagnall 2668 Cranford No2 was making possibly its last appearance in steam along with visitors Peckett 2000 and United Steel Co No22 (Hunslet 1931), a very appropriate loco as USC locos ran into Cottesmore from the Exton Park quarries. Thanks to Russ and the Museum for organising and hosting the event respectively. Also thanks to the crew and loco owners who made it all happen.

    brilliant photos that photo charter was amazing and it was probably the best day ive had at rutland railway museum i cant wait to see the other photos that got taken on the day it was really nice to be part of a day like that day hope everyone else enjoyed them selves they all seemed to have a good day

    Steve - re our earlier discussion about new welded inner firebox for RSH 7609, sometime known as 'Meteor', just to confirm that I have today looked at the remains of the old box and that to was of welded steel constuction with plenty of corrosion and rust!!

    This is only my second post on this forum although I've been a member for a couple of years or so. I didn't realise this industrial thread was here (shows how much I've visited!). Absolutely fantastic!!

    I own the major share in Barclay 0-4-0 2369 of 1955 - No.8 - and am currently undertaking a major overhaul of the axleboxes, rod brasses etc.

    I would like to obtain copies of the relevant drawings; the only ones that exist for No.8 relate to an oddball lubrication arrangement that was tried on her and 2368 which, I presume, was subsequently removed by the NCB. I have been to Glasgow University in the past however, although they have all of the Barclay drawings, the collection is something of a minefield to find your way around. What might be helpful is if anyone can give me answers to some of the following questions in an effort to narrow down the potential field of search:

    1) No.8 was the last 16" 0-4-0 to be produced and is therefore to the final design with rounded edges to the running boards, welded cab with rounded corners and square windows etc. When was this design introduced? I've located photographs of 2292 of 1951 which is to the old design and 2296 of 1950 which is to the new design but with traditional running boards so did the changeover take place around then and if so which loco was first? (I know the years don't add up with the numbers but that is how they appear in the Barclay order book!). If I knew the works number of the first loco it would make a good starting point.

    2) Were the changes merely cosmetic touches to the platework or was the traditional design altered? I have a drawing (No.12/28) for Connecting Rod bushes which has the notation "Cancelled 18/1/54. To be used for replacement purposes only when called for. For new drawing see tracing No. 1/54." Some of the dimensions on this drawing are different to those on No.8 which tends to support the theory that some design changes at least had been introduced but again there is a slight anomaly on dates.

    Basically I wanted to try and narrow things down in order to make best use of time if and when I next visit Glasgow; it's a long way from Yorkshire!!

    Any help would be gratefully received.

    Hello John,

    The Barclay archive is an absolute maze, as you say. In the past, I've found obscure drawings quite by accident. I think Barclay's kept drawings of the standard types back, when they donated the drawings to Glagow University. I can suggest that you ask for the loco bundles book. This is document GD 329/5/20/1A-0 This will allow you to find the type of locomotive you have. For instance, the 12" locomotive is type 52, 52A, 52B or C. This type reference will depend on the year the loco was made. Once you know the type, you can trace back to the first of the type. Sometimes, Barclays will issue a set of drawings for the 'upgraded' parts, as a supplement to the 'standard' drawings. If you are lucky, you can find the upgrades, and the relevant drawings, as you go back down the book.

    Thank you. At least that's a positive starting point; last time I went I had a list of parts that I wanted to find drawings for but ended up spending a full day just trying to find my way around the "system". The only two references to No.8 were the drawing I mentioned in my previous post and the works photograph which, as luck would have it, was missing! I did wonder if that might have been retained by Barclays due to the loco being the last 16" and if so, where would it be now? I thought it might be useful for livery details.

    Any other info would be gratefully received.

    You could try asking Graham Lee at Statfold Barn if they have anything seeing as he also owns the current Hunslet Barclay Company. They have a large collection of Hunslet archives that is an ongoing job to catalogue, not sure if they have anything from Barclay though.

    RSH Austerity 7169 of 1944 is currently nearing the end of its 10 year overhaul at the Flour Mill Workshops. It has received cylinder liners and extensive boiler repairs. The motion is now being reassembled and the boiler will be tubed by close of play today. Hydraulic and Steam tests are sheduled for next week. The loco will be reassembled and should be in steam at the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway for May Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday. The locomotive is being re-liveried into an industrial livery and will loose its 30 year identity of 68005. Other work includes a new bunker, tank repairs, and general overhaul of motion and fittings including new piston rings.

    It is an outstanding achievement by the restoration team (Flour Mil and Blaenavon) to have completed this locomotives overhaul in 8 Months.

    From the late May Bank Holiday she can be seen hauling trains trains from Blaenavon High level up our (soon to be famous) 1 in 28 section.

    Kitson 5474 'CARNARVON' freshly repainted at the South Devon Railway by members of its owning group the Worcester Locomotive Society. The Loco was completed in just over a week with the aim to have the loco on display in a more prominant position on the line to provide added interest and also act as a catalyst for fundraising towards eventual overhaul.

    The method of the boiler repair/overhaul on RSH 7609 'Meteor' now on the East Somerset Railway has been agreed with the boiler inspector. A new inner firebox is already on site, see above. Work is due to commence following the completion of GWR 5637 and essential diesel loco maintenance. I will try and keep this forum updated.

    RSH 7849 'Moorbarrow' is receiving minor attention to its right hand big end bearing following it running hot.

    I have just seen on the Gala's section of the Forum about a Manchester Ship Canal Gala at the Middleton Railway in Leeds. As a fireman there I hope to get a turn! MSC 70 is visiting, along with our home fleet, should be a cracking day! Would be good to see all industrial fans celebrating our 50th year in preservation with us.
