Sounds a really good event, can't wait to see 80072, that loco will be a new cop for my Dad and I. I take it the loco won't be too heavy for Hexdon Bridge then? Any clues as to what the second visitor will be?

    Cheers

I was surprised too - I would have thought that a Standard 4 Tank would have too heavy an exle loading for the K&ESR, but I'm pleased at having been proved wrong on that score. 80072 looks lovely in the pictures I have seen of it. A fantastic restoration job on what was a really clapped-out wreck.

Definitely a weekend to put in the diary.

Same reason for the surprise here.

Over the past few years the axle loading has gradually risen with various improvements to track and bridges. Currently we can accept an axle loading of 21 tons, that allows us to have far bigger locos than many people have previously realised! It's not our intention to become a big engine railway as such, but an occasional larger engine for Galas will certainly create a lot of interest.

As Seagull mentioned in the initial posting, one of the new side attractions this year is a toy & collectables fair on Monday.

If you have items you want to sell or just know somebody who might be interested, please see the thread under the model railways section.

65 is currently having various smokebox components replaced. She had an experimental Armstrong exhaust system trialled last year and as it proved sucessfull a permanant version is now being installed. We are hopeful of the work being finished in time for the Gala.

The second engine is now confirmed as the Spa Valley Railway's LMS 'Jinty' No. 47493. She should sound very nice on Tenterden Bank!

Believe me you will not be disappointed with 80072. It's a wonderful machine and is very well liked by the crews at Llangollen.

This will be 80072 third railway it will have visited since returning to service last summer, it has already been to the Churnet Valley and is currently at the Great Central, and is gaining a lot of admirers. Which is good to see.

Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 will see 45 minute service over the full-line from Tenterden to Bodiam plus goods trains etc while on Monday 3rd there will be the most intensive all-steam service we've ever attempted. Trains every half-hour from Tenterden to Northiam (change for Toy & Collectors Fair) and an hourly service to Bodiam with many trains top and tailed.

Will 80072 be paired with the BR wagons?

James who is writing the timetables is also the keen wagon painter largely responsible for turning out the BR rake of wagons, so I would think there's a pretty good chance of that happening!

USA 65 is out on steam test today and is going a treat after the recent mods to her smokebox apparatus.

Also here is the press release for the event.....

Plans are well underway on the Kent & East Sussex Railway in preparation for their annual Steam Gala in May.

This year’s Great K&ESR Steam Gala is set to feature visiting standard tank 80072 from the Llangollen Railway. This is the first time a British Railways Standard class loco has ever visited the South East line.

The Standard tanks have a real local connection with much of the 155 strong class of engines being built 50 miles down the road at Brighton. Whilst 80072 never ran on the Southern, many did and these would have passed through Robertsbridge and Headcorn where the K&ESR once joined the mainline.

Also on the railway from Brighton are two Stroudley tanks known as terriers. The first terrier No. 70 Poplar, was built at Brighton works in 1872 and was one of the first of the class to enter traffic. Poplar was also one of the first to be sold, and the first Terrier of two to be sold to the Kent & East Sussex Railway in 1901, being renamed Bodiam and given the number 3. Other than some short spells at Brighton and on the Hayling Island branch she has remained on the K&ESR to this day, returning to traffic after overhaul in 2006. The other Terrier on the line is 32678 originally built in 1880 as No. 78 Knowle. She returned to traffic in April of last year and is sporting the livery which she carried when she last ran on the K&ESR in the fifties. Knowle is celebrating 70 years since she first arrived on the K&ESR this year.

Appearing for the last time at a Gala event in her current SE&CR livery is P class No. 753, she is due in the paint shop soon after the event to be repainted into the wartime livery she carried in France in 1915. The repaint along with the restoration of the railways prototype PMV 132 also known as the Cavell van is symbolic of the railways efforts to remember and respect the past.
The other visitor to the three-day event is the Spa Valley Railway’s Jinty tank No. 47493 of 1927. Originally built at Newton-Le-Willows. She started her career working the North London suburban lines and fits in nicely with the other passenger tanks engines working over the event.

Following her launch back into traffic at the railways recent branch line weekend Manning Wardle No. 14 Charwelton is to help the little engines with the larger trains running over the event.
Other engines that should make an appearance at the event include the railways unique 16XX pannier tank 1638 fresh from the paint shop after being varnished, Southern Railway USA tank No. 65. and Hunslet Austerities 23 and 24.

As ever, for a K&ESR gala there are 3 days of intensive timetables with engine changes at Tenterden, Northiam and Bodiam. Freight trains, passenger trains and mixed trains. There is an engine cavalcade from 09:30 on the Saturday. The railway is also operating a special fish and chip train on the Saturday night hauled by 80072 departing Tenterden at 18:30 – pre booking is essential.

On the Monday a train departs Tenterden for Northiam every half an hour hauled by the larger engines, this connects with an hourly service to Bodiam hauled by the smaller engines starring at the event. Just when you thought that was enough of a distraction, the railway is also holding its first toy and collectors fair at Northiam, with trade stands and valuations by Dreweatts.

Tickets start at £15 for a single days rover ticket with one two and three day rover tickets being available; as well as the usual selection of concessionary and family tickets.
Special buses are being run on the Sunday and Monday to connect with trains from Headcorn. There is a large free car park at Tenterden for those who are driving to the Railway.

For further details please visit www.kesr.org.uk or phone the railway on 01580 765155.

Full ticket prices for the event are:-
£15 adult £10 for child for one day £27 for two and £30 for 3 days.

Thanks for posting all the details. I will hopefully be attending on the Monday. Can anyone tell me when/if full loco rosters will be available? Many thanks.
