what new steam engines are coming out this year and which steam engine's are going out of ticket this year

 

One coming into action should be Black 5 No.45428 'Eric Tracey'.

 

1338 & 3822 are both coming out of traffic at Didcot towards the end of the year.

 

With a fair wind, B473 (already relaunched), 178 (February?), 323, 263, 55 and Fletcher Jennings "Baxter" at the Bluebell Railway - the place to be if you like your engines Victorian / Edwardian and small!

Is no 65 still running at the bluebell

 

The boiler of Manning Wardle No. 1601 has just passed its steam test following an overhaul and the loco should see service on the Middleton Railway in the near future. Is this the first 21st century built boiler to have a second period of use?

 

Sadly not (though C class 592 is running). However, agreement has been reached with the owner to restore 65 fairly quickly, probably once 263 is finished - that probably means restoration starting in late 2010 / 2011 and back in service maybe 2012 - 2013 or so. Usual caveats concerning large old machines apply!

Fabulous engine - dead reliable, did anything asked with a minimum of fuss and steamed on a candle. During the depths of the engine shortage over the last couple of years, 65 was a real mainstay and seemingly never put a foot wrong.

At a push 7822 - Foxcote Manor could be back towards the end of the year. Fingers crossed all round!

 

75029 on the NYMER should be turned out in the spring with a new 10 yr certificate, following a winter intermediate overhaul and I would imagine that Ian Riley will be doing the same with 45407.

 

And another Black 5 from the MHR this time 45379 - Not seen running in preservation!! I wonder if this loco might be named?? As some of the Black 5's are in Preservation? (Just a thought)

 

Wow that's two more black 5's now to go with 44767 and if 45305 is finished this year ais well that will be 4 more black 5's this year

 

How about celebrating the glut of Fives at a Fowler/Stanier day, with everything from Jintys via Black Fives to 8Fs present? Solve the clashing LMS / BR liveries issue by covering everything with soot and calling the event "Lostock Hall Resurrected"

Well Ian Riley says that 45407 and 44871 are to visit the NYMR for its spring gala, 54212 is running on the line and if 45428 is finished in time that will make four (plus 53809 and 49395)

(Plus of course "Fingers Fletcher" to add to the Lostock Hall flavour!)

That's quite true, but Mr. Riley says it will be back in timefor the NYMR gala. If you think back to how fast he turned round 76079 a year or two back I wouldn't bet against him!

 

One out, one in....and a "maybe"...

6233 Duchess of Sutherland has a boiler extension to November 2010, so should therefore come out of traffic for overhaul in 2010.

I think the Waterman-owned GWR 0-6-2T currently in Bridgnorth works is due to come into service this year. Sorry the number escapes me at present. Crewe are doing the boiler and the SVR the rest.

There was talk of the PRCLT standard 4 tank, the boiler of which is nearing completion at Bridgnorth, might be running again this year.

 

You're not wrong. In the works for overhaul. The list of work reported includes:
Valve chest re-bore
New piston valves and rings, inc piston rings.
Boiler lifting from frames
New flue and small tubes.
All springs re-tempered and 'set'
All tyres re-profiled.
All copper pipework annealed
All axleboxes overhauled.
New brake blocks throughout.
New L/H big end, two new little end brasses, all coupling rod bushes remetaled, new gradient pin bushes.
New running boards, new firebox cladding.
New 'Corten' steel smokebox wrapper and sacrificial liner plates.
Valve setting, loco re-weighed.
Boiler hydrauliced, loco re-assembled, and fully re-painted.
Plus the two hundred or so small jobs entailed around the major work.....

However, it is booked out on the Great Britain railtour on 10th April and Ian has every intention of the loco being on it. A lot of the work is already completed.

 

6634 is the GWR 0-6-2 tank.
