Thanks for these photos. I've seen a photo in a book another 9F at KX. An A3 or A4 had failed with an Up train and the nearest depot only had a 9F spare in steam. The 9F worked the train the remainder of the journey (either Grantham or P'boro') to the Cross and then the reurn working. Not just the spotters, but even normal passengers were amazed to see a 9F at the head of an express passenger train at KX!.

Of course if the 9Fs had lasted to the mid 1980's as planned then Fictitious Liveries show us what might have been.

Kings Cross top shed (34A) had an allocation of 9F's for freight work, but in summer it wasn't unusual for one to get pressed into passenger service when loco's were short for Saturday diagrams.

The only ECML Eastern Region sheds to have 9Fs allocated were New England and Doncaster.
9Fs were also allocated to March and Immingham and, towards the end of steam on the E.R., Colwick and Langwith Junction.

Ahhhh.........so the 9Fs 'used by top shed on the 13.45 Grantham diagram (back to KX on the 'up Heart of Midlothian') were 'borrowed' between duties then ! Interesting - thanks )

There's that brilliant story of a 9F standing in for an LNER pacific, driver was told just to keep to time, and he ran it up to 90mph and said he just went as fast as felt safe.

In his book 'Top Shed' (Ian Allan 1975) Peter Townend states that on one such trip the loco ran at 93mph down Stoke Bank. Apparently the Eastern Region General Manager was a passenger on the train and voiced his concerns at a freight engine being used on an express. The book records a proposal was made that maximum speeds for loco types should be based on the number of inches in the driving wheel diameter. It was pointed out that the pacifics would then be restricted to 80mph and the proposal was never heard of again!

The same book has a picture of 92196 passing New Southgate on the 13.45 Grantham.

Not 100% sure, but the last one (92219) could be Goring troughs
