I appreciate this is a few steps back but just to clarify, I suspect that the NVR won't need the tender back until after the 9F's current ticket is up. City of Peterborough still looks a way off yet.

WC with a stanier tender should be doable I'd have thought......

 

I stand to be corrected but I don’t think it’s as simple as just connecting a tender from loco type A to loco type B, especially if they are from different railways.

 

BR managed it during the loco exchanges where they fitted a Stanier tender to a bullied Pacific so it could use water troughs. I would have thought water connections standard now and you may need a new connector bar but not impossible. Picture here.

It seemed to vary - depending on whether draw-gear, water supply connections and braking systems were compatible or could be easily adapted. For example, Gresley D49s ran with ex-GCR, ex-NER and LNER standard tenders.

I am surprised that tender swap was possible. I thought that Bulleid tenders were vacuum-braked but that Stanier tenders were steam-braked?

 

For an experiment under controlled conditions, nothing to stop you temporarily disabling the tender brakes for the duration of the swap. The crews were hand-picked and could be briefed for the reduced braking performance light engine; and with a train it is a fairly small reduction in brake force available.

Is the Bulleid tender brake in the same line as the train brake?

 

There would need to be some alteration to the locos brake pipework to provide a steam supply for the tender. Basically it would be simply tee-ing into the feed to the brake cylinder and providing the additional pipework, support and connections. It would not be a huge or difficult job which the works could do when prepping the loco for the trials. It may even be that dispensation was given to run with the tender unbraked for the duration of the trials. The handbrake would be available if needed.

 

Steve, it is a vac pan on a Bulleid tender, not a cylinder.

 

The Bulleid tender wasn't used, though so how that tender was braked is irrelevant. The Stanier tender just needed a steam supply from the loco steam brake.
