Cheapness is relative, affordability is absolute.
Seriously, once corrections to product or price are made it takes a couple of years for word of mouth to completely reverse the damage. This based on observations of past situations.

Today, I was on Pickering station for 20 minutes or so today and at least five people with family groups were trying to decipher the timetables. (I would like to see a clear large departure board displayed together with the full timetable, as the present set up is confusing). They all asked me which trains were steam. I pointed them to the roster and they made various comments about diesels everywhere but hardly any steam. One black five was out today but I couldn't say with any confidence which trains would be steam tomorrow. I suggested the best bet would be 1200 but they wanted the 0920 and for it to be steam.

The answer is a five letter word - steam.

On a positive note, Pickering was very busy and the trains seemed well patronised.

 

Which, ironically, is exactly what we do. Train to Newtondale, walk to Levisham (a very pleasant one along easy terrain and, as a bonus, almost all downhill). Then we sit on the station and eat a picnic while enjoying the glorious peace and quiet, the burst of activity as the trains pass, then the atmosphere as station once again returns to its slumber. We then get the train back a couple of hours after we've arrived - chilled out, relaxed and refreshed.

Nowadays people always want to be 'doing something', claiming they're bored after about fifteen seconds. Which is missing out on all the mental and physical benefits of just stopping for a while. It's a running joke that all our favourite places are those which most people would say "But there's nothing here." That's precisely what makes Levisham appealing to us.

 

On a side note does anybody know when the 9f will be back out and about? She was last out a couple of months ago know some work was being done -
She is such a spectacular loco.

 

Hopefully by October, as it's due to visit the Bluebell!

Took me a while to see the joke, there!

I looked online, and per 92134's page at steamlocomotive.info, as of March, 2026, the "new-build BR1F type tender ... has now been completed and will soon be fitted to its new frames soon. The current BR1G type tender that No. 92134 is using is ... currently being overhauled at the Nene Valley Railway and will soon need it back." The Bluebell already has a 9F tender on-site, from their own 9F (92240, currently out of service), which they can use.

I'm also wondering if the haulage fee is lower (important in these days of penny-watching for heritage lines - perhaps a smaller trailer can be used) if they don't also take a tender? This seems like a deal that works for everyone, though; 92134 can earn a hire fee even without a tender, etc.

I think it is more a question of one trailer, rather than one each for engine and tender
A very sensible move.
That leads me on to another question of any other variations possible of hire locos with already available tenders. Would we see recreations of the locomotive exchanges with tenders from different companies.

How many years ago was the tender last used Tom? Earliest digital image I seem to have of it is parked up at HK in 2009.

 

Hasn't run at the Bluebell since 92240 was withdrawn ca. 2000, but the "Awake the Giant" group have been restoring it over the last few years, as the first part in the eventual project to bring 92240 back. Loco and tender would always travel separately, but essentially we need one lorry trip for the move, rather than two. So there is a saving on transport.

That 92240 page says the engine "was withdrawn from service in 2002", and implies it hasn't run since then; so, around 2002, it would seem.

Note that that page also says "The last two years have been spent working on the tender", and the June, 2026 update has a lot of detail on the then-ongoing work on the tender. I'm assuming it will be ready to run with 92134, when it arrives for its visit.

PS: The details here are getting a little off-track for the NYMR...

In simple terms, the maximum gross vehicle weight in the UK is 44 tonnes. You can exceed this weight, with approval, but the load must be split, if that is possible. As a tender can be uncoupled from the engine, the two have to be transported separately. The Furness Railway 0-4-0 tender loco no.20 is sufficiently light to fit on a low loader without exceeding the 44 tonne GLW so can be transported without being split but I can't think of another standard gauge tender loco that would conform.
