I think you are quoting the 14 day in advance rover fare. So, for the turn up and go customers the tariff makes a bit more sense.

Trouble is it depends on how you search NYMR. This page says advance (although I missed it first time) but makes no mention of a sliding dis

Well that assumes you would know and at the time I posted had missed that it was 14 days in advance to get that deal.

Was planning to visit the NYMR tomorrow but may defer to Tuesday as wary of temperatures tomorrow suggesting steam could likely be replaced with diesel. Don't suppose anyone has any info either way?

I hear things are a bit tight for loco availability tomorrow. Tuesday may be better.

    Far too much!

    WeeleyFestival.jpg

I actually didn't pay anything, just walked straight in!

As far as the NYMR is concerned, it is not the pricing that has very much reduced my visits but what is on offer.

Good to see the first train from Pickering (47- hauled) just about full at Grosmont this morning.

Eric's train from Whitby was loaded nicely and we had a decent run up the hill for the Rail Trail.

Q6 and Repton in steam on shed as we passed.

The couple in front of me at the ticket office seemed a little surprised at £49 each for Grosmont-Pkg return.....

According to post #6636 Grosmont Pickering is now £35, unless that is either in advance or not yet started. Like another member I could not find it on the NYMR ticket page yesterday.

    They do make things difficult:confused:

The £35 is a 3-stop for those turning up at the Pickering BO asking for a ticket to Grosmont, and sold several today. Yes, it is not on the website as it is aimed at those turning up on the day at Pickering and specifically asking for a ticket to Grosmont: if booking on the website 14 days in advance then the best value ticket would actually be an all-line Pickering to Whitby donation fare at a net cost of £32.43 (or £34.65 for those that don’t like the donation fare) ie less than the 3-stop £35 fare.

So is the 3-stop only available from Pickering ? I must admit I was surprised to hear the full fare being charged from Grosmont but assumed the new rate had not been introduced yet.

Available from all booking offices. if a £49.5o fare was being charged from Grosmont then this will unfortunately be in error.

FYI: The new 3-stop £35 fare went live this weekend.

Is there revised signage, clearly explaining the new ticket prices, at each booking office?

For walk-ups at the booking office there is /will be revised signage indicating that the best value all line ticket is the £54.50 donation rover ticket, whilst on line there is now clear information that this is the best value ticket with up to a 30% discount if booked on line in advance.

The only “new” ticket price is now the 3-stop £35 ticket, which is now available if people only want to travel between Pickering and Grosmont. But for most people the alternative donation rover ticket makes more sense particularly if booked in advance (with a net cost from £32.50).

Can you just go through the maths on that? I get a lower cost if you assume a higher rate taxpayer.

I’d be careful about “net cost” presentation on things like this, as the gap between payment to charity and receipt of the refund from HMRC to get to that net cost may vary by many months.

Having literally just returned from York this evening had the option of visiting on either Mon or Tues. Was put off on Mon owing to the heat but when I saw the roster on Tues morning and saw the 5 as the only steamer I didn't make the trip up to Pickering in the end.

This is absolutely not aimed as criticism (and appreciate some may be upset at the fact of this) but I suspect when people either plan or travel on a four train service where three are diesels they will be put off travelling either making the trip in the first instance or a return trip to the line. The rosters are also not posted until the morning of the day of operation which makes planning also difficult.

Understand some of these factors are outside of the railways control and always stipulate possibility of diesel replacing steam but the latter has more of a draw with Joe public. Yes there will be a handful of diesel gricers on a random Tuesday but families has to be the core customer base at this time of the year. If there are short term temporary issues it would probably worth them being stated on their site for people's awareness and understanding knowing that future journeys would likely feature more steam involvement.
