Thank you. So what does your answer in post #536 relate to?
    "Nr 9 yes from 1964."
This photo appears on VoR's website (undated) showing all three with name and number plates in (presumably) BR unlined green:-

This thread has stirred some wonderful memories of holidays in the early 1960's when the locos were lined green.
My best memory though, is going on a Warwickshire Railway Society railtour on 16th April 1966 which took in Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, with a visit to the original VoR sheds.
There was no service that day but N0 8 had been specially steamed for the occasion.
With a friend I climbed aboard No 8 and blasted out "Ilkeley Moor" on the whistles. I got a round of applause, but a sour look from the poor soul allocated by BR to keep us all under control.
While searching the web a few moments ago for VoR photos I came across a Youtube video of this tour which includes footage at the VoR. There at 1 minute 48 seconds is my mate Chris and I, climbing up, blowing the whistles and climbing down the other side with big grins on our faces (I'm the one with the orange-lined hood)! I was 15 years old - happy days. :)

Hmm. Not 100 percent sure about the cylinder lining, but when I first saw no. 8 in 1964 the lining on the tanks certainly dropped down at the front to follow the outline of the tanks. I'll have to look for those photos.
I'm not so sure about that. I've attached scans of No.7 in Aug.1960, No.9 in Aug. 1962 and both 8 & 9 in Summer 1966 and there doesn't appear to be any "drop down" lining as you describe - unless I'm missing something? The dates are accurate as I was there when my 'old man' took them.

That is the simplified lining from 1960 onwards.
The drop down and cylinder lining were 1957-1960 according to The VOR in Detail, which is compiled from the railway's archives.
The cylinder lining is in the photo below, but very faint.

The "drop down" lining wasn't something I was aware of until this discussion, but there is an undated photo of No7 here alongside a Manor (scroll down) :-

No visible lining on the cylinders though.

Thanks for the explanation and now I understand - the drop down lining came first. Personally I preferred the simplified lining.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

I also prefer the simplified lining. The drop down part just doesn't look right, and the cylinder lining is only just visible, covered in dirt ?

    Thanks for uploading the scans.

I think I read somewhere that he had done a lot of the restoration work himself (particularly the carpentry work)

Yes he did; the wood used was all felled and seasoned on the estate. Peter gave an enormous pile of rejected oak to my brother and I, all sawn and ready to use; we built a splendid pole barn with oak cladding and doors.

That’s fab, thanks for sharing. I didn’t realise there was sunshine in Wales in Autumn…

Nothing to due with lining ,my 1969 photo' attached is 9 Prince of Wales in plain Blue. I arrived at the station one early afternoon in the same week to catch the train to Devils Bridge ,the loco was on the train but crewless. After a few minuets a type two diesel arrived in the main line station with a short parcels train. To my surprise the driver and second man, hopped off and made their way over to number 9 ,and took over. The run was not without incident though .A stop for a blow up was made at Horse Shoe Bend ,this looked to me like it happened regular here at this spot, as there were pieces of coal scattered about the trackside at this point.

Believe you me, there hasn't been much!! (though whisper it quietly, this weekend isn't looking too bad, just as well as I have got a hedge to cut!).
