Current and Proposed New-Builds

The unfortunate truth is that most newbuild groups lack the ability to actually fundraise to achieve their aims. 4709 isnt alone in this, and is trying to find short cuts. As it stands only a handful of new builds will work from the list of ones originally mooted.

I suppose at what point does a group/society hold their hands up and say enough is enough. This is where i have full respect for the Manchester United project, they tried, realised it was a dead duck and did the right thing and moved on.

 

Most of that has already been said on the 7027 Thornbury Castle thread. Some of it is wrong: 4709 is intended to be a bit lower and narrower than the original 4700s in order to fit on NR, so it will (if completed) easily fit on heritage lines.

 

They clearly have some cash, or they wouldn't have bought the castle. Time's winged chariot is more the issue I suspect.

IMO it's a terrible decision, and gives a stain to all the other new builds, especially those with donor parts. (FWIW, I think using the barry 10 was very sensible, ditto Maindy Hall).

 

Well there you go, a modified Castle boiler is to my mind as near as you can get to the right boiler without building a new one.

What kind of logic makes you think that a boiler sat on 6.8 1/2 inch drivers is suddenly going to be too big to fit on wheels a foot smaller

Given the outcry against chopping up a Castle (even though there are at least half a dozen extant), the offer to retain the frames etc towards another Star is i think an attempt to mollify; most people on here are already of the opinion that there isnt the desire out there to fund this - so it will never happen - this is simply a more positive statement than ' we are having its boiler, and the rest is going to be broken up for spares'.
I Personally dont have a problem with that.
The Clan Project toyed with idea of buying a 9F and modifying its boiler to fit and stripping the rest. The conclusion was reached that very little of the original could be used and that the outcry over breaking up a perfectly good Barry Wreck was not worth the trouble.... (the Boiler is now a spare and the rest still a wreck).

 

Chopping up a wreck with no foreseeable chance of restoration is an order of magnitude less contraversial IMO.

(Is it still around? I mean, when they've polished off the clan, they'll have most of the bits for the never-built 2-8-2...)

 

The 9F boiler ex-92245 is currently being overhauled at Crewe for use on 92212.

 

But I'd got the facebook group registered already and decided what colour to paint it in...

You can buy an OO gauge one on ebay for about the same price as it costs to produce a new build full size one

 

And just who this is 'we' that you are apparently representing?

 

Surely 100% of people. We dont need one. Some people may want one, but thats different to needing one.

 

Well on that basis we don't 'need' heritage railways, but there are a lot of people on here who want them.

 

But the castle is in existence. There is no pressing need to destroy it.
