    New arrival...

"Hot off the press….we are just in the process of unloading our new arrival at Wansford, a Tar Tanker.
This vehicle has come from the Northampton Lamport Railway and will be restored by the Wagon Group to operational condition as a wagon from the Peterborough and District Tar Distillers Ltd, which had premises and sidings on the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) at Fletton.
This is immensely exciting for us as we will be able to recreate a piece of Peterborough history. This wagon will also be dedicated to Doreen Foster who passed away recently and was not only a founder member of the NVR, but the last employee of the Peterborough Tar Distillers."

That's excellent news - I have a soft spot for tank wagons and to restore it to a condition that ties in with the NVR so well is ideal :)

The single star should mean it can run at 35mph!

Josh and I had to remain at home due to being Covid positive :( But some of the guys were able to make good progress over last Friday/Saturday on the second static van in the bay platform at PNVR...

"What a difference two days makes…..
Over the last two days we have been working on BR Van B777633 in the Bay Platform at Peterborough. Phil, Trish and Tim spent some time yesterday rubbing down and getting the van into undercoat. Today, Phil, Colin, Jason and Paul got the public side of the van into top coat.
Meanwhile, Tim has been busy in the Banana Van on his one man crusade to create a Wagon Museum. Featured is a sneaky peek of the finished article, but there is plenty more to do.
At close of play the platform area at Peterborough was looking more presentable with both the Banana Van and B777633 looking good."

A selection of the photos (there are a couple or so more on the FB post)...

Feeling hot. hot, hot - but still making things better than they were before :)

"Well it was hot today, so hiding in the shade was the order of the day!
Tim got in early to get a head start on lettering before it got too hot and managed to letter the chalk board on the Banana Van and B777633. Then Tim did a bit more work on the museum.
Meanwhile, Jason and Cliff found a shady spot to paint some planks and Stu and Josh with similar ideas made a start on the non-public side of the Banana Van."

Good to see the three types of wagon coupling on show, presumably with an explanation of how they work - the Instanter may not be immediately obvious to some.

Yup - the three small frames above them contain descriptions of each, There are also a couple of similar oleo related frames to go on the wall above the sectioned buffer. When complete pretty much the entire interior of the van will contain wagon related panels and items.

Useful, as I'm unaware as to how they work.

It’s a pity they didn’t think to add a UIC coupling for good measure. Nice display all the same.

It's Tim's baby, so I would have to ask him, but I suspect it's a case of what we had available...

I have a whole pile of updates backed up, but right now, it's a week until our next Freight Driving Experience day with the Class 45 Peak on traction duties.

£165 a person for a half day with refreshments on arrival followed by two round trips hauling the demonstration freight rake, with a visit to the footplate to drive for part of each round trip.

Afternoon nearly sold out (one place left at time of writing), but places still on the morning session.

Time to catch up, so before today's session report, here's an executive summary of the stuff I've managed to miss recently (back end of August through to end of September):

    1) More work on the box van and banana van (inside & out) in the bay siding at PNVR:
    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongr...NiecMdqC8p1FAZRbc5eYtZ4Jx8EYAT6avUjAnpqJ2P7rl

    2) We ordered replacement brake blocks for the civil van, and a test casting has been supplied and test fitted - all good!

    3) The Tar Tanker was moved from Wansford to PNVR ready to join the restoration queue:
    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongr...MbwHzStVvurzjFrwMZU3HPmWic99V4SqaSLoBdTCYxK3l

    4) More cosmetic restoration on B777633 in PNVR bay siding and Tim painted the RailWorld buffer stop:

And bringing everything fully up-to-date, here is today's report, mostly prepping the rake for this Friday's Freight Driving Experience (tickets still available for morning session!).

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongr...QJkGuxWAey3bFQFxiPu9h7nBNqtsYfVH64uZLCRikAdil

"Today saw some of the Wagon Group members do some prep work on the running rake ready for our Diesel Freight Driving Experience on Friday (get your tickets here: https://nvr.org.uk/.../diesel-freight-driver-experience-2022). First up was a quick repaint on the south sides of the two MOD open wagons to eliminate the 'patches' around the signwriting (a shortcut on the previous repaint). By lunchtime they had both been rubbed down and painted in fresh freight brown. After lunch (taken on the brake van veranda), Stu fitted replacement chalk boards to those vans missing them (a result of his wagon 'home work'), while Phil, Cliff, Jason & Josh got on with checking and oiling the rake ready for Friday - Phil oiled round the couplings and brake gear while the others concentrated on axle boxes. As we were working in the civils siding next to the running line, we occasionally had to retreat to a place of safety while the Polish tank passed with the passenger services (and hence everyone being clad in hi-viz today). At the end of the day, the rake is close to being ready for Friday's fun and games with the Peak."

Time to play catchup again, so firstly, just over a week ago, we ran our final Freight Driving Experience Day of the year with Peak traction in form of 45041 "Royal Tank Regiment". A great day was had by all!

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongr...wk7NnWBpFNaraocmcK5obCihcfMv5Xi2jVeuxQL5dB9nl

And then last weekend, we switched from our normal work session to attend the Quorn Wagon & Wagon Open Weekend, alongside several other wagon groups, where a great time was had by all (even if supervising Josh driving the tugs was a hair-raising experience, well, would have been if I had any!) and a lot of useful contacts were made and information exchanged. We look forwarded to continuing the inter-working between the groups going forwards.

    Some website news...

A new photographic collection has been presented to us from former wagon group leader, Norman Pannell. This collection covers the years of the first wagon group at the Nene Valley Railway, without whose effort we would not be where we are today.
We owe a massive debt of gratitude to Norman and his team in saving and then restoring so many wagons and we hope to continue this good work for many years to come.
It has taken Timothy Hobman a few months to sort and scan the photographs, but we are pleased to present them here:

    https://nvrwagons.wordpress.com/image-gallery/the-norman-pannell-collection/

I've also added the 2022 Q3 summary blog post, and eagle eyed viewers may spot that the newly acquired tar tanker has finally made it on to the stock list.

Today was cold, damp, uncomfortable, and I now ache a lot! But, as usual, at the end we were able to say "it's better than it was" :)

"Today was all about brake blocks.
Six members of the team were on site at Wansford to replace all 16 brake blocks on British Railways Standard 20ton Brake Van B954024.
The first part of the morning saw the team move the new blocks to the work area and then Stu, Josh, Tim, Steve, Cliff and Phil set about removing all the old blocks from the van.
Some were easier than others to remove, but by lunchtime all 16 were off.
After a quick break the team set to work fitting the new blocks and adjusting the brakes accordingly.
The session finished in the dark with tools packed away and the old blocks in the scrap skip to help raise funds for the railway."

Well, whatever the rogue post was (it came and went without me seeing it!), let's get back on subject with the latest Wagon Group update - which involved a marathon 18 hour 600 mile road trip (guess who got to do all the driving - which took up 12 of the 18 hours!).

Once again, a big thank you to Simon @ Teversham Motors for the "courtesy van" (he was actually fixing my Freelander while I borrowed the van!)

Given the state of the van, a surprising number of nuts were undone with the battery impact gun, and the angle grinder only appeared to deal with a couple...

"It’s been a busy couple of days for Stu, Josh and Tim.
Yesterday (Friday) it was a 5am start to get to Newcastle to strip the interior fittings from a grounded BR Fruit Van. This is part of a project started by Tim and Paul Foxwell to collect all the parts to re-create a fruit van. We now have all the parts needed, so watch this space for news on this exciting project next year.
After leaving Newcastle we went to Durham to collect some tyres and then on to York to pick up some lorry side curtains for van roofs. It was a long day, but worth it!
Today (Saturday), joined by Jason back at Peterborough, Stu, Josh and Tim unloaded their treasures. A bit of tidying up was also achieved and Stu managed to fit a new chalk board to B777633"

Once again, there are a few more photos on the FB post...

Been meaning to post this for a while, but if you're short of Christmas present ideas (or even want to treat yourself), we do have a set of three Peterborough Coal wagons (individually numbered) for £15 each or £42 for all three. The Wagon Group/Miniature Railway shop has them and should be open every running day through the Santa season...we may be able to send out via post with a small shipping charge on top, but given the postal strikes etc it may be safer to get them direct from the railway :)
