You're not alone in that Matt, probably goes way back to when I was first shown a token being taken from the apparatus.

Thought this might be a suitable picture for this thread. 18 year old Fort William fireman Cameron Overend shows his (culinary) skill with a shovel as he prepairs breakfast for his Jacobite colleagues last month. Hopefully he will keep his shovelling skills going for years to come. IMG_3927 copy.jpg

Continuing the theme of token exchange, here is Ardlui in September 1970. Interestingly this double header is unusually running in tandem rather than in multiple so in accordance with the rule book of the day the token is carried on the train loco. Shortly after this the rules changed so that the token was carried on the leading loco regardless of the secong loco being manned or not in order to avoid any confusion. The locos are 5354 piloted by 5414 70-9-25 8 5354+5414 copy_edited-1.jpg

Continuing the West Highland token theme.
Token exchange at Mallaig Jct. Dated June 87 so just before RETB made this redundant.

Single lines with passing places always affords opportunities for tall stories whilst awaiting the other train.......... P1140695.JPG

I'll let you think of your own captions for this one. Steamrail's Engineering Manager, Warren Hall, contemplates the situation at Seymour Victoria shortly after R761 developed an "earth fault" during the Aus Steam '88 festivities. Needless to say it was back on parade for the cavalcade of locos in Melbourne the next day.
