Look forward to the double jubilees through my local area, just a shame this GB trip isn't going up over the Marches!

Does anybody know the plans for the two once they reach Cardiff? 45596 has some trips from London this summer, but I didn't think they were until July? Assume Leander will head back to Carnforth?

Is 6233 hauling the train out of Cardiff, or joining at Taunton?

Bahamas at Dinting (Scots Guardsman behind) after having arrived from Sheffield with a Rail tour. Not sure of the year but I couldn't find a shot of 5690. 20210317_165018-01.jpg

To have the Scot and BIL hitched up in Scotland is quite a thought.

I think the itinerary shows them double headed south from Stirling.

Can anyone shed any light on what the current ground conditions are like in Scotland, fire risk etc. Would anyone care to hazard a guess what days will feature a diesel on the back, not a deal breaker as I would expect it to be used on the rear at some point. Anybody booked on it ?

From a friend booked on the tour: diesel on the rear on Saturday & Sunday with 46115 to and from Inverness (insurance due to recent repairs) and then on Monday due to limited coal capacity on 35018 around the fife circle as ECS stabled at Joppa before and after the tour.

Happily corrected if I am wrong!

Many thanks for the information, looks like day one, the double jubes and the Duchess could be the potential highlights for the purist. Hopefully the diesel remains on the rear and not the inside over Scotland.

I thought the work on Scots Guardsman was planned a long time back. So if it's not match fit why is it going anywhere? And if it is match fit then why is 'insurance' needed? And I thought that SG was booked for the Fife trip not BIL?

We are used to diesels on the rear for shunt movements and all the other legitimate reasons given nowadays. But now the diesel is needed in case the steam loco is not up to it?

I imagine that you might be 'happily corrected' on all that rumour!

Ground conditions in our part of Scotland are reassuringly damp albeit we're a good few miles west of the path of GBXIV. Having watched the Scottish forecast last week it looks like most areas along the route will have had some rain

SEPA have a network of gauges which will give at least show if there's been recent rainfall. Readings can be found at https://www2.sepa.org.uk/rainfall/

Alan, you will have to stop all this constant angst about diesels on the back - you will make yourself ill at this rate. It is almost impossible to take a train to the Edinburgh area without a diesel on the rear for shunt moves. That applies to diesel charters as well as steam ones. Most of us are just pleased to see steam at the front of a train, regardless of what may be hanging on at the back.

Actually, @torgormaig, post #135, that I presume you were referring to, was much more to do with a steam loco and the fact that others, not me, were implying that it isn't totally match fit. I also observed in #133 that the rumours about GB XIV were not something I was inclined to believe.

I think we all recognise that the GB tour is of a scale that is not undertaken by other promoters or TOCs and is therefore a high stakes venture on price and credibility. I'll let tour participants reflect on your "well, at least steam is on the front" observation when they may have spent over £3k for the privilege.

On previous GB’s the use of diesel loco’s has always been limited with them ‘shadowing’ the train rather than attached, with a few notable exceptions. I would hope GB14 would continue this.

However, we are no longer living in normal times with issues over coal supplies and the cost of fuel of all types skyrocketing
(along with everything else!) so we will find out soon.

Having waited three years since my last trip I am hoping for the best on this one and at least will reconnect with old friends!

    Anyone else on here travelling?

Try and put yourself in the position of the loco owner. In the case of 6115 it’s had work done but hasn’t had the luxury of an extended running in period on a heritage line.
I could be wrong but following a major incident on the ECML, I think it’s now mandatory for loco owners to have delay attribution insurance. It may be different for WC as they are both loco owner and the TOC.
The route 6115 is taking in Scotland is mainly single track so anything that goes wrong will have a major impact on services in both directions. OK the insurance will pay up but they will take their revenge at the next renewal by whacking up the premium, excess or both. It could be considered commercially sensitive so I won’t divulge it but I do know what one loco owner pays in total for insurances. It’s a considerable sum that you wouldn’t want increased if you could help it. On top of that, you can’t insure against loss of reputation and credibility. The passengers will have paid the tour operator and they will naturally blame them if a part of the tour goes wrong. NR will put it down as a black mark against the loco owner.
If it was my responsibility, given the above considerations, I know I would err on the side of caution and hope everyone would understand. Even 35028 tows a diesel around in the leaf fall season just in case.

All fair comment and a well balanced view in my opinion.

So you observe that 6115 has had work done - the detail of which is nobody's business other then West Coast who quite legitimately choose not to go into detail with the preservation community in contrast to some other loco owners. I have no view on that approach or criticism even. It's their business and none of mine.

But then we have a major tour commitment coming up - I think 6115 was originally booked four days 'on the trot' - and there seems insufficient time to test/deal with whatever the concern is that a few posters have suggested. Obviously these things happen but one would hope that possible eventualities would be factored into such matters. That's the proper way to do business. But there again, maybe that's exactly what was done but something else affected such planning.

I remain of the view that WCRC should be given the benefit of the doubt and rumour should be viewed as just that. No doubt the RTC knows what is going on and if there's anything to say about whether this is a steam or now a mixed traction tour then they will say.
