My total admiration for those out on Shap yesterday. I got blown off my step stool twice on Corfe Common and my Dad said he nearly got blown off his feet at Afflington Bridge. We had winds no where near as strong you had up North.

The trouble was, it was a cold northerly wind, which saps your body heat pretty quick if you're not well padded. Took me a time yesterday to get warm again once inside. I was tempted to take a "Victor Cocktail"...but resisted...

Can confirm it didn't run via the S&C as we spent c4 hrs walking within sight of the viaduct and saw nothing. The electric went off in the place we were staying at at 8.30 on Friday night (taking with it the light, heat, water and cooking facilities - projected to be off until this afternoon at the earliest) and with no mobile signal it wasn't until 10am yesterday morning when we got down to Horton in the car that we regained contact with the outside world and knew where Scotsman had gone!

Never known weather like it, even under the viaduct it was extremely hard to stay on ones feet against the wind, at one stage the roads to Ingleton, Hawes and Settle were all shut! Walking along the valley west from the viaduct you could see literally rows of poles down and there was a lot of ice hanging from what cables were up!

Terrific lighting in the very unfriendly conditions, Peter...well done for making the effort!

I also see that the one on the 23rd has been retimed out of Victoria at 7.45 instead of 6.40 and back at 19.27, an extra hour in bed. :)

RTT up at last for tomorrow and I see that Scotsman is bringing the train back to Preston via Blackburn.

Sometimes the beauty of where you are stands alone from anything in the landscape. Just saying.
