Going by today's experience, I'd expect a couple of class 47 diesels regardless of whatever RTC might promise!

No motive power is 100% reliable and when 40+ years old it gets worse, and that includes diesels. Maybe though you should look at the records to see actually how many tours have not had the planned motive power.

Precisely. And the downside of using locos intensively - and one could argue that both SG and BIL have had a lot of work lately - is that the windows of time to keep on top of all the host of preventative maintenance necessary are small. It's not for nothing that the Jacobite has more than the basic minimum of motive power up at Fort William.

Rather a harsh comment? RTC have no call on motive power, be it steam or diesel. That's down to what 10A have available. No one can forseen a failure on the day, its just a fact of life.

Any news on the problem with SG Ralph? It sounded from what you said as though the issue with BIL is not too difficult to fix. A busy week coming up for WCR with two Dalesmen, the CME and the Waverley to cover.

Are you inferring that the maintenance regime for those two 10A machines is inadequate ?

Ralph, I have previously been on a good number of RTC tours which have been most enjoyable, and realise that failures can happen, especially with 80 yr old locos and modern safety regimes. However, what disappointed me and my group more was the number of lies we were told by various people with stewards tabard on. I think that they need to realise that "I don't know" is a perfectly good reply to a question, instead of making something up. Once you are told a lie, you then wonder how much else that person has told you is equally incorrect, and doubt it.
I wish you had been stewarding yesterday, as I know we wouldn't had this issue with you.

Preventative maintenance? Do you know for sure that a) 10A has not carried this out and b) the failure could have been avoided? Some failures will occur no matter how rigorous the maintenance regime.

Agree. I just feel sorry for the fact that this summer we seem to be stretched on loco supply. That can't be fun for any set up that wants to have their locos available when needed but also with enough down time for some tlc. True of heritage lines; true of the main line.

Ticket letter for Saturday's CME just dropped. 46115 is the stated motive power. Hope the Scot will be fit to run this week.

Sounds like a pretty impressive performance for a Jubilee on 11.
