It would be interesting to know the reason(s) for the main movement being by road, when movement by rail is possible for a short distance. Speed? Lubrication? Cost?

I would’ve thought because the loco isn’t in a complete enough state to move over the national network

Exactly. It's still at least 6 months off being ready for steaming, let alone service.

Got to be cost, you would think, and although re-assembled, or as many parts onto her, she would not have been steamed, and lubrication as you mention.

Good Luck with the move, and final commisioning.

My thought was that if it could move at all on a bit of NR track it could in principle move further, though there could be several good reasons against.

Huge difference between a shunting move carried out dead slow and taking a loco over 100 miles at any kind of reasonable speed.

I for one can't help but feel that Gresley is being kicked out, so that the workshop area can be turned into another cafe/eatory. It's been a number of years now since my last visit to the NRM and the main purpose of the Museum aspect was taking on a more secondary roll to the offer of food and drink to the great unwashed general public. If I remember correctly on my last visit to York I didn't even bother with the NRM, rather I visited the rest of the City of York instead.

The NRM should be championing the scientific and engineering heritage this country has and which the collection represents. What better way to do this than have engineering on site that visitors can see? Sadly the museum has been steadily moving away from this for years. I share the view above that a visit to the NRM is no longer a prerequisite of a visit to York - I visited last weekend and left the museum feeling deflated recalling just how great the museum used to be. Needs someone in charge who understands the collection and our heritage.

Speed could indeed be one of the good reasons that I suggested. If my original question indicated that I thought it could have been taken the whole way by rail, sorry. I only wished to enquire which of several possible reasons was the significant one.

Whichever marketing company comes up with phrases like this, needs the P45....

Fortunately not all museums are so backward looking. Local to me the Shuttleworth Collection holds engineering days - Covid rules permitting - where you can get to chat to the engineers while they work on the aircraft.

The Shuttleworth Collection is not blighted by State control; National Museums are useful tools for the State.

It's a rubbish name, undoubtedly but " Wonderlab will be constructed on the site of the museum’s current workshop and many original features – such as the locomotive wheel drop and crane – will be incorporated into the final design" suggests at least half an eye to the original purpose.

    But
I read that as saying that the "many original features – such as the locomotive wheel drop and crane" will become museum exhibits, with new machinery in the new workshop.
Edit: But perhaps this discussion should be in the NRM thread.

    Has he ?

the report says he has taken up employment with Morris Lubricants but not whether this is full or part time and says nothing about his relationships with various heritage groups that he has been involved with. Methinks the report is a case of reading into a situation that 2 + 2 = 5.
