That's what they all say. :) More seriously, has anyone ever made an offer that has been refused?

I would hope that donors share the same ethos as the railway they are donating. But there are of course counter examples ie Nabarro etc.

I don't get the point you are driving at. Charities have their objectives, but those objectives aren't infinitely broad. If you get offered something that is outside those objectives, you politely refuse - and if you are being nice maybe point them towards somewhere more suitable as a recipient. You seem to be suggesting that if someone came along and offered a heritage railway a very valuable old master painting for display they should accept it just because it is valuable - regardless that it has no connection to their core objectives and they have no means to securely display it.

No. I am saying that if you have an overdraft and creditors at the door (for example) and someone asks you to display their painting in return for clearing your overdraft and getting rid of the creditors you are not going to say 'sorry it doesn't match our curtains'.

A related question: I understand it was the donor's wish that the E1 should be restored as W2, and of course I respect that. But did the terms of the bequest make any stipulation about how long this identity has to be carried for? Or are we to assume that it will be permanent?

I only ask because, in her true identity as No. 110 Burgundy, she had a minor claim to fame as Stroudley's 100th locomotive, and apparently the great man threw a dinner party to celebrate the occasion! Ok, it's not an earth-shattering historical event but it's a nice story, and it would be nice to think that she could be turned out in her original LBSCR livery as No. 110 at some point, even if only briefly.

The very kind person who made the bequest only requested that it be used to recreate E1 W2 Yarmouth. The actual terms of the bequest were unconditional but the IWSR has chosen to proceed on the basis requested. To this end the boiler that is being designed will enable the engine to look like the original W2 when completed.

We are well aware that we are the custodians of Stroudley's 100th locomotive 110 Burgundy, not forgetting that we are also custodians of his gold medal winner 40 Brighton.

What was the boiler fitted onto 110 when owned by Cannock Quarry ? Was it a stock boiler, or one made specially for the E1

The Cannock & Rugeley Colliery had a boiler specially made by Bagnall in 1929, only a couple of years after they had purchased the loco from the Southern Railway. Why they had a boiler specially made rather than buying or exchanging one from the SR is unknown. It was clearly specially made as Bagnall prepared a full set of drawings; fortunately some of these have survived and are in the care of the Staffordshire Records Office.

I suspect you'd have to look up the boiler records for the answer. The SR disposed of 6 E tanks in 1928 and another 2 in 1929, plus a D tank (which shared the boiler design) in 1928. So in principle there were boilers available from recently scrapped locos, but I think it is quite likely that the locos were condemned on account of the boiler condition - so a new one makes some sense rather than an extensive repair to a worn out example. One wonders whether, even with the design costs, Bagnalls were able to quote a lower price for a new boiler than getting the SR to construct one, or maybe the SR were just not interested?

More to the point its a bigger boiler which made her a more powerful locomotive

It is good to hear that the railway fully acknowledges and appreciates the locomotive's past as No. 110 Burgundy, specifically it being Stroudley's 100th locomotive, indeed something I was not aware of myself until now.

Of course I can fully respect the IoWSR wishing to fulfill the benefactor's request as well, certainly as in that guise the locomotive best serves the railway's core aim of showing the island railways' full history, the E1s being a core part of that even if No. 110 itself didn't specifically. The engine needed a new boiler built to run again anyway, so made sense to give it one that the E1s based on the island used.

Personally though I see no reason why both sides of of the debate can't both be satisfied.

Have the engine carry the guise W2 'Yarmouth' predominantly as that suits best in the context of the railway it'll be primarily based on, then on special occasions have it temporary revert to it's original identity, with the only compromise being that the boiler is not the same as it was originally and even then I don't think that would be too noticeable.

The distance between Cannock and Rugeley Colliery and the Bagnall works is about ten miles. Bagnalls are situated next to Stafford station and the LNWR main line so the cost of transporting the new boiler would have been far less than from the Southern.

A new boiler would caused no difficulties to a firm like Bagnalls who over the years constructed more steam locomotives than Brighton did.

( Topham which is at the Spa Valley Railway was supplied by Bagnalls as new to the nearby West Cannock Colliery in 1922 was partially paid for in coal by the colliery! )

If it's a blue IoW loco you want, why not make it an authentic Island livery? OK, so it'd take more than a few tins of paint, but anyone fancy a guess what colour the two C&N 2-2-2WTs originally ran in? ;)

Re: W2 Yarmouth Does anyone please know, do restoration plans extend to the wheel re-balancing applied - for very good reason - to the original four transfers?

Nothing concrete from what I understand just yet, more so a general statements of intent by the current owners and operators of Terriers to have as many of them in operation for the big anniversary next year.

I have to assume some thought and discussion has been made behind the scenes between groups and railways in some form, with at least one event holding the ambition to gather as many of the class together as possible.

As to where such an event could be held though, I'd place my bets on either the Kent and East Sussex Railway, or the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Both have strong cases to being ideal gathering points, as both railways have a long standing history with class as well as rolling stock and not too strenuous stretches of lines to allow the diminutive locos to run with little hindrance. As to which is the most ideal choice out of the two though, it would be the KESR, for the simple fact it's on the mainland and has vacuum operated rolling stock which are key points against the IoWSR seeing as most the Terriers are on the mainland and vacuum braked.

It would be more convenient for the Isle of Wight Terriers to come over to the mainland for a big Terrier gathering then it would vice versa, but of course the folks of the IoWSR might not be so keen on their Terriers being absent from their railway, even if it's only for a short time.

But we shall see I'm sure, time will tell.

is 662 Air braked? so maybe not that year, but prehaps all the remaining former island terriers could be reunited at Havenstreet, of course it would have to wait till 10 Sutton is running again, 662, whilst not an island engine, could take the identity of the former island engine that it acquired its bunker from, for the actual anniversary, could the Bluebell host a great gathering of all the working terriers and of course, have its non working ones on display, prehaps with boxhill from the NRM , it would be a fitting location as its a former LBSCR Line. If sponsorship , private photo op etc could be arranged, arrange for Gladstone, to be on display also, and if she is looking complete , and can be moved out of Atlantic house, include Beachy Head.

Fenchurch, Bodiam, Knowle and Martello AFAIK are duel braked. Not sure about Sutton.

Stepney, Boxhill and Waddon won't be running next year.

A couple of mild misconceptions here I think. Both the IOW pair are air brake only. The IOWSR Is not especially easy graded with 1 in 68/70 in both directions out of Havenstreet...

Onn plea to @martin1656 Please don't make such an event too expensive because of ''add ons''.

It wouldn't be a Martin special without some implausible pairing. I'm surprised he hasn't suggested it is held at Swanage with evening runs to Bournemouth and Yeovil ...

As for brakes: there are ways and means whereby vac braked locos could work air-braked stock on the Isle of Wight; or air-only IoW locos could work vac-fitted trains on the mainland. Both have happened in the relatively recent past.

Pair of Terriers racing up Parkstone Bank on a summers evening with half a dozen MK1's on the back, what is there not to like about it (Unless you are the accountant)
