Probably because the application to open a new coal mine to run heritage railways doesn't go to the same department as the application from a heritage railway asking for financial support to get through a pandemic. And also because they don't necessarily put 2 and 2 together

    Evening All,

I've just added another part of my 1990s NVR video to my YouTube channel; this part includes a visit by 60103 FLYING SCOTSMAN in April, 1994. Hope it's of interest:

I'll have to bear that in mind; I missed the Jub when it was on the Mid-Hants last year.

It's been reported that the Railway has been awarded a £20,000 grant towards the restoration of Derek Crouch, from the Association for Industrial Archeology. This will no doubt assist as it has been found that she needs a new cylinder block to be cast.

    Details at:

    https://nvr.org.uk/article.php/36/small-loco-group

In other news, the Danish F class, 656's, bottom end overhaul is all bit finished and is just awaiting the boiler back from LMS, which should happen before too long

Class 14 D9520 (the green one) has been sold by its private owner so has moved to the MNR, however D9529 (the blue one) has been bought by a separate private owner and is staying on the line.

The GWR Prairie from Didcot has arrived for a couple of months and is due to haul trains this weekend I believe.

How does Derek Crouch (HC 1539/1924) compare to Julia (HC 1682/1937)? I ask because the latter has already had a new cylinder block cast. But I’ve no idea if they are the same.

Funny you should say that... The guy leading the project wrote this a few weeks back:

I also understand options are being explored with Wissington as well, but only seeing the updates circulated on Derek Crouch, couldn't comment on what stage they're at

That was a lucky guess of mine; I had no idea the locos were the same (I knew they looked similar, but so do other HC locos of the era). 'Wissington' is HC 1700/1938; interesting that Derek Crouch is 13-14 years older than the other two.

Sounds like it is lucky for the project too. I remember talking to the owner of 'Julia' a few years ago; at the time he was smarting from having to spend a small fortune having that pattern made. It was GCRN's first steam loco on site and it will be really good to have it in steam one day.

The frames are in the heavy overhaul shed, currently being (or recently) painted I believe. The boiler is currently sat outside, although I believe it is expected to go somewhere else for overhaul once a contractor has been selected...photos taken yesterday while I was helping with the brake van rides.

Is he still involved? As I was on the PW side I didn't get to know many of the loco crews or shed staff.

He’s the membership secretary and has done done turns on the Swedish railcar. Not sure if he’s still on the steam roster though.
