The smoke deflectors are pretty close to the original 'Wagner' pattern. What Brits call 'German; pattern are the later ones, the 'Witte' pattern.

They could always have borrowed Bressingham's Class 52 - oily rags in the smokebox, diseasel shoving from behind....job done!

Are you on about 92203? That was supposed to be in South Africa, although filmed in Hampshire.

Yes, I couldn't remember which were Witte and which were Wagner (and if I tried to be clever I'd get it wrong) but for a quick wartime sort-of-kreigslok look I would have thought that would have been worth it

The 9F is carrying a number 528079 on its smoke deflector.
There is a real class 52 Kreigslok 528079 preserved in Germany as far as I know in operational condition.

They're rather more sensitive about swastikas on locos there, for some reason.

Whilst it is good for the NYMR to get the contract, surely it makes more sense to film a German steam train in Germany to look more authentic for a movie, or even Wolztyn where there are still German type 52s running.

    Perennial enthusiast debate.

What the enthusiast sees: "Why didn't they visit Railway [X] to make film [Y], they have the perfect locos and rolling stock to give an authentic portrayal of the chosen era?"

What the film location manager sees: "Does the venue have sufficient hard standing for all our trucks, catering stands, equipment and so on? Do they have a reliable source of sufficient power? Is there suitable local accommodation nearby for the talent? Can the railway guarantee suitable discretion about advance publicity? Will we need to put in place additional security to guard our equipment? Does the railway have an experienced liaison manager that can accommodate our needs? Will we be able to run the shots we want free from interference from external events (i.e. can the railway give us exclusivity for the length of time we need)?"

See where authenticity figured on the list of film demands? :)

OK, I'm sure it is a consideration - but one amongst many, not the sole focus that tends to be seen by enthusiasts looking for absolute historical fidelity.

The last film had an alien in it so I'm not sure authenticity is top of the priority list

And there I was thinking that German law forbade the display of the swastika.

Is "Hanger A locomotives" accurate? Sounds a bit Franglais to me.

I know that at the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg when modelling the Nazi period the Swastika is omitted - red flag with an empty white circle. (The model models the same place in different time periods). (Not my photos). I do recall that the model does represent things like antisemitic violence and the holocaust (and later Communism).

Considering the sensitivity in Poland about the experiences of Nazism in Poland, the Holocaust and the political and legal climate in Poland at the moment, I am not sure anyone has any appetite to dressing up a loco in full Nazi kit and running it around.

Add to that the transport costs of crew and all their gear.

I'm sure they've built in the relevant decrease in box office takings from the members of this forum who will refuse to go to cinemas to watch the film due to its lack of authenticy. As we know, National Preservation members are a key part of the film maker's target market.

But perhaps Reichsbahn swastikas were not big enough to meet the film makers' requirements.

this point was dealt with on another thread, as long as it is historically accurate ie it carried the symbol during the period in question it is allowed.
my answer from the other thread

that's not quite true you are allowed to buy and sell and display genuine pre 1945 relics displaying the swastika, SS and other symbols. Although if you sell them in an open market place all the symbols have to be covered from public view.
I believe the logic behind this is if its in a shop you have to deliberately enter the place to view the object, but on the open street you could just be walking past and see it.
In a model railway shop in Berlin I found a Reichsbahn loco cab side no plate complete with swastika symbol, my wife unfortunately refused to let me buy it
museums are allowed to display these symbols on items as long as they are historically accurate

this Me163 in a aviation museum has the swastika on its tail.
