A nice big rake of Bulleids would be nice, and accurate behind a Standard 3 up to the end of mainline steam in 1967.

Well yes, but by the same chalk given Granges weren't scrapped until the 60s, you could run them with Mark 1 coaches. I was just amused by the "build new coaches" bandwagon being jumped on for three engines that probably even post-date the Mk1 design.

A 12 car rake of Pullmans out of Waterloo wouod be perfect. 3 car Bulleid rake with a van/ milk tank?
For the Clan you could have all sorts. Maroon Gresleys? An 8 coach rake of Blood and custard Mk1s?

Or you have the gala at a railway in south Shropshire/ North Worcestershire that has the largest collection of mainline stock that arent MK1s.

I suspect that may well be plan 'A' in the mind of the Trust:Happy:. BUT what other additions would make for a wonderful inaugural day/weekend/week ? Waterloo would be nice but is definitely not on the agenda!

COVID delays aside, it is good to see that people can now see the completion of 82045 as a given, and are talking about her future.

I'd counter by saying that until the mid-late fifties, most coaching stock would be of predominately pre-nationalised design at the very least. Which is approximately when the balance started to swing. Though there again I keep forgetting that Railways in the UK didn't exist until the 1st of January 1948 with the much vaunted/sainted British Railways spontaneously coming into existence.....

Only if you want to blame Attlee and the BTC for the ludicrous network, the many isolated country stations and the total lack of any strategic planning which led to that situation in the first place. Mind you, that'd be a great fit for agenda pushers within certain political circles. :Meh:

One of the things I've loved about 82045's thread has been how it's managed to stay largely on-piste, throughout the many twists and turns of the whole project. Another has been the welcome regularity of updates. Can't wait until the completed loco demonstrates just how ideal one (or more) of these hitherto unsung workhorses would've been for many of our heritage lines all along.

If the happy day ever dawns when a charter train is seen crossing Barmouth Bridge, I'll certainly not be losing sleep over seeing this little beauty, back on one of the class's old stamping ground, with a suitable (of necessity, short-ish) rake of MK1s in tow! :)

Which would be fine, but we are talking about a BR-designed-and-built engine here...

Anyway, back to the plot, yes looking forward to seeing it in steam. I suspect being a tank engine is quite a help here. apart from the P2 lot, who probably knock out 8-wheel tenders in their sleep, it's an extra level of easily-overlooked time/cost when concentrating on the loco.

Some class 197s are being fitted with ERTMS for the Cambrian, perhaps they wouldn't notice a set of equipment going missing? I've seen a figure of £640k per loco to retrofit ERTMS for the ECML

Most of what I've gleaned concerning ERTMS on the Cambrian Coast Line (CCL) comes from these pages and the rather pointed comments you'll find expressed on Barrie Hughes' (www.isengard.co.uk) website. My limited understanding is, that back when the system was first mooted, there was talk of a detachable unit (which AIUI has to be fitted to the train loco, meaning you can't just bung a suitably fitted class 97 on the back) to permit ooeration of 'specials' and that the lack thereof has been a bone of contention ever since.

Given the considerable marketing potential of steam on the highly scenic CCL, which is a long way from the most profitable route in Wales, you'd have hoped someone on high would encourage a solution being found ..... and implemented. The recent spat between rail management and the LA over who pays to maintain the walkway on Barmouth Bridge scarcely inspires much confidence tho'.

Right now, if system spec, space and/or funding won't permit a mainline certified 78xx or the 'Pocket Rocket' west of Shrewsbury, the chances for a 3MT would seem vanishingly small ..... worst luck! :(

    Lots of pleasant WIBN here.

Just a reminder that Trust members were canvassed some years ago for their views on the installation of modern main line running equipment on 82045 and given cost estimates to help their deliberations. Sorry, I can't pull out the relevant text, but it is lurking in the Trusts public archives somewhere. The outcome was a resounding vote in favour of construction going ahead to the highest standards for Heritage running. The option for additional modern main line equipment would be left to the future, unless someone came forward to donate the substantial sum required for this idea. No such angel appeared.

The message from this is never say never, especially where the 82045 Trust and its members are concerned!

    Oh hell, yes! :)

In all honesty, I owe you folks an apology for hijacking the thread for a rant about the continuing absence of any CCL steam .... so, sorry 'bout that. Still, if you're going to go and build something associated with that beautiful (if sadly underused) route ...... it is NP after all. What would you expect? ;)

I suspect, 'home line' aside, you're going to have 'em queuing round the block to hire 82045 in for a spell of running, so regarding any mainline questions, while, as you so rightly say, never say never, somehow, I seriously doubt you're going to have too many gaps to fill in it's schedule, for the entire duration of it's first boiler ticket. Personally, I'd reckon that particular can will remain safely kickable for the foreseeable future.

... or maybe just allow it to be a good, solid, bread-and-butter loco on the SVR!

I'm always drily amused by the number of comments you get about new heritage line locos (either new build or newly restored after a long absence) along the lines of "wouldn't that look good somewhere else"! The odd trip to foreign climes is nice, but generally railways are - quite rightly - focused on running their own operations. If the railway and its supporters have just sunk £1million + into a new loco, they need to ensure that the benefit of that, in terms of a long period of hopefully reliable high annual mileage running, accrues to the railway that paid for it.

I'd imagine a small tank engine is a very non-optimal place to start looking to hanging electronic signalling kit on. At least a tender is a slightly kinder place for that sort of kit.

    Let's get it built first...

Whilst it's certainly being built at the SVR, t'ain't being built by the SVR. I was thinking in terms of the stated raison d'etre for choosing a 3MT over other "gaps in the roster" in the first place. Any notion anyone beyond the trust has a say in what they do with their property is plain daft and I'm surprised you've managed to read that into my post. From the horse's mouth (http://www.82045.org.uk/82045_about.html):

"We have no personal ambitions with 82045: we simply want it to be built and would be more than happy to build it on behalf of a benefactor, the only criterion being that the engine should be based on the SVR, though available for hire to other heritage lines."

The trust's website specifically refers to this particular class's suitability for heritage operation. Of course, it's entirely a matter for thems as forked out to get it built, but given what's on their website, it'd surprise me were it to spend it's entire first ticket on the SVR. No more, no less.

In the 158s, both cabs have an interface (of course), but the big box of tricks is at one end of passenger saloon. I can't remember if it was a set of luggage racks or a pair of seats that had to be removed to fit it in.
In addition to the tender point, there's a question of whether you can run tender/bunker first with it.

I take your point Tom but how nice does 2999 look with appropriate stock at the SVR now it’s been let out it’s cage at Didcot? ;) Getting back on topic I think the thing with 82045 is it wouldn’t look out of place anywhere from Swanage in the South to the NYMR in the North and a few points in between! Much as I’d like to see it have a little tour I’m quite happy to see in regular use on 16 miles between Worcestershire and Shropshire first though. Be nice to see it team up with 32424 in Sussex at some point ... :)

Indeed, and I am not averse to the odd gala visit away. What sometimes irks me though is how a frequent response to completion of a loco is for it instantly to go and work somewhere else! Look at how many people seem to think the best thing to do with Beachy Head is for it to go mainline. I - and I suspect many others - haven't supported that project just for it to go off and work somewhere else inaccessible and of net financial detriment to the railway that built it!

As for 82045 - I'm looking forward to visiting the SVR to see it run in due course. Grump over.
