From what I recall of them, the V&R carriages have a rather strange (as well as uncomfortable!) layout which would make it difficult to to secure adequate protection. Sad, as there appears to be money to be taken.

The closed carriage seating layout is strange indeed and the 'opens' (like those on the WHR) feature a door at each corner.... but unlike the Torquemada inspired original solid wood benches, formerly found in 3rd class closed stock (which I well recall dug painfully into one's spine), the seat backs feature padding these days.

Whilst the VoR is obviously closed for the year, does anyone know if work is still continuing on their new loco display / carriage shed?

Can’t confirm if work is progressing on the new facilities but the VoR do appear to have some employees (back?) at work. The permaquip was seen on a frequent basis between Aberffwd and Devils Bridge back in August and the Hunslet (with the flail) was operating on at least one day. Alas no steam!

Work has been continuing on the new carriage shed, hopefully an update on this will be published soon in the next newsletter and on the dedicated facebook page for the project. https://www.facebook.com/VoRWalestotheWorld/

The Permaquip has been used by the Permanent Way team for a weekly line check and also they have been doing lineside maintenance during August to keep the line looking at its best including grass cutting.

No public trains are running this year, current plans are to begin running trains in March next year in time for Easter.

I think the VoR was gifted (?) some historic steelwork from London Bridge station for this museum, is this going to form part of the structure?

Not part of the storage shed being built now. The London Bridge columns are intended for the museum building to be built, next to the workshop, at a later date.

Thanks for the clarification. Exciting plans all round. I hope they manage to advance them quickly.

Evening all, here is a link to the VoR's latest newsletter with the launch of a fundraising auction that gives two chances for a guided tour of collection X in Surrey and two chances for behind the scenes tours at the railway among other experiences.

Wow. No way I can bag the Collection X tour but my what a prize! Locos that outsiders haven't seen in decades! Hopefully this new attitude could see a full appraisal with pictures made public, so many treasures that would be fascinating to see.

Are the winners taken to the location of Collection X blind-folded and in the boot of a car?

It can be arranged- but you’ll have to pay X-tra for those sort of ‘services’.

Isn't that the Epping and Ongar?

It looks like an excellent way of raising money. Short of a visit to the strategic reserve in Box Tunnel, it must be as near to the Holy Grail of railway preservation as you can get

That is until the next fund raising prize is a visit to the Amazon Jungle to view "Lew's" secret hideaway:).

You are assuming of course that Lew isn’t already in Collection X!

Fantastic opportunity but ultimately it will go to those with the fattest wallets.
I fully understand and support their desire to maximise their return but can’t help but think that they may actually have raised more with a raffle approach as I am guessing that many people will think that it isn’t worth them trying to bid but a LOT may well have been prepared to have had a £10 (or more?) punt on the basis that it would have been a donation to a very worthy cause even if unsuccessful.

Anyway, I now need to establish what the sale of any slightly less crucial organs might raise. One careful owner, never raced or rallied......

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for adults.

I guess they must have decided that something like this is more likely to attract someone with very deeper pockets than the likelihood of say 1000 people having a £10 punt on it.

It is very eye catching and in a market where every line is looking for donations it is certainly one to grab the attention to the wider auction.
