Have a look at the Llangollen thread, it's been moved due to other circumstances.

I don’t think anyone is questioning the competence of loco engineering work, and the high annual mileages are testament to that. What is more confusing is the loco strategy. Only three years ago, the railway seemed to be heading towards consolidating the supply of locos either owned within the railway family, or on long-term agreements. Now it seems that any return to steam operations is likely to be quite reliant on short-term hires. In other words a complete reversal of strategy.

You could argue all day about what is the optimum loco strategy, but surely the key thing is that having once decided on one, it remains relatively stable, given the significant long-term nature of the investments needed to make any strategy work.

Not strictly true. Although double-track was still in situ between NF and BL when the line closed in 1971, the former Down line had already been taken out of use by BR when the signal-boxes at Norton Fitzwarren Jcn and Bishops Lydeard were closed in March 1970. However both tracks were still in use between DR and MD at closure in 1971, but as independent single-lines with no connection between them at MD.

And what has changed in those 3 years? the people who were the responsible people for that policy left, and was replaced by who? who decides the day to day policy over locomotives? i'm assuming there is a full time CME ?
I can't understand how M Rowe can say he's sad that 88 is leaving, but then go on to support the management that are the reason why this situation arose , and why it is not possible to operate anything beyond Minehead.

Does Minehead Loco still have that generation of skilled personnel? I hope they do, but haven't a lot of staff been made redundant, or have walked in anticipation of that?

I'm sure the group would love an extra pair of hands and or a financial donation to help complete it.

why do you want everything done yesterday?

Clearly they're being lazy. It's not as if they've got another loco in traffic and a third one under restoration from Barry condition. And I'm guessing the casting and fitting of new cylinders to 3850 is a 5 minutes job as well.

I was merely pointing out that to the person who said the WSR had lost 3850, regardless it is not operational. It's not a criticism of the group at all. Talk about taking things out of context.

I think the existing P-way should get sorted first, anything after that is a bit of a bonus.

Both will be ready by this friday yeah? I mean its vital to some that they are.

Oh wait two Heavy freight 2-8-0s and another Manor you sure they are the correct size that the WSR's internet forum based cme requires.

I mean they must be the CME they seem to have a lot to say and in the wsrs case they will always follow who shouts the loudest.
