If the key people are furloughed even the best staff replacement system will not work. Furlough means furlough. No need for a "expanded argument". Just think about it. There was nobody there.

All major heritage railways had to furlough paid staff. Some may have lost a few people over the lockdown period. We know that the WSR did. All major heritage railways have already restarted their services or have announced when they will restart. The WSR seems to be the only one that cannot restart.

What makes the WSR so unusual? You can only assume that the railway must be in a particularly difficult situation. It must take a particularly hard nosed person not to have a certain degree of sympathy for the situation.

sorry Steve but you could bring people off furlough to do a handover . My employer has brought people back and then put them back on furlough to suit business needs . stop making excuses for a situation in which key people have left the business with their roles now uncovered and vacant . Good business planning is about minimizing risk . I come back to my earlier hypothetical and completely fictional point . Someone saw £££ signs in the furlough scheme ( i know how pleased they were as my fictional character posted so on a well known social media site) . While other railways planned a longer term strategy some adopted a much shorter view

Steve , my world here is not perfect . I actually feel for the volunteers who give their all for the West Somerset Railway .

my sympathy is stretched when that obsession with the railway means that people don't see or are not willing to question decisions that are taken that have profound implications for the railway that means so much for them

there are many here who can see the evolving scenario and for you guys don't want to see it happen

Which is fine - pretty much what I suggested as item as reason 2 of my post. It would be interesting to hear if all those friends feel the same way though.

If only it was a genuine choice between those three options.

Supporting the current structure (perhaps the word 'structure' is a proxy for 'the board'), for a good few of us, is not an option. For reasons much exercised on here and expounded by others, I personally do not want to be involved in an organisation where they conduct themselves in such an unethical and/or incompetent manner. Why would you put any of your own efforts or donations towards that? No thank you.

Forcing the issue by making a stand doesn't seem to be an option either. It's certainly not possible to influence the board through the collective action of individual shareholders, because there is no way of getting in touch with them all, other than through the PLC (turkeys voting for Christmas etc). The only way, as a shareholder, to force a change of direction at PLC board level is via the WSSRT and WSRA who, between them, hold just about enough voting power to do that. But it is clear that both the WSSRT and the WSRA are very happy, at least in public, to toe the party line and go along with the unethetical/incompetent behaviour of the PLC because it's the "only game in town". Maybe they both just want a quiet life. That is understandable, but deeply regrettable.

And if you do make a stand, the empirical evidence is that you get expelled from the WSR 'family' pretty quickly. The Board simply don't want to hear bad things, or to accept the help or the advice being offered to them by good people, or to admit they are wrong and change direction.

So that's it then. The only option left is to let things unfold. So perhaps the friend of @Sidmouth has a point. Why waste any more words on this?

Blimey I would have liked to work somewhere where handovers were the norm let alone one that took many weeks to write!
We once had a new staff member join the company on a Monday, on the Thursday she was sent to Los Angeles to a supplier in financial difficulty and apart letting her come back for more clothes after a couple of weeks she was there for four months managing their finances to ensure we got our kit. She did not know our systems let alone those of the supplier.
Normally we were told learn as you go along or in the words of my favourite GM JFDI

Quite. I'm always amused at work where we get very het up about internal changes and the difficulties they cause, yet people are on 1 month notice and often have leave to take between handing in notice and leaving.

Looking on Railcam today of Minehead station there has been some serious weeding going on, looks a whole lot better than last week. But why only the two lines between the platform and the seaward side.

Well that sounds like a poorly ran company to me, would not surprise me if you had/have a high turn over of staff.

Yes outstanding effort on the weeding front. From the pictures uploaded the station is looking good for the open weekend. Just a shame the old trucks and the dmu under the torn cover can't be moved. It looks really untidy just sat there.

Interesting that you comment on this section of line. Someone asked a question about who would pay for its maintenance if the WSR ceased to exist or someone else operated the line. It crossed my mind that with projected sea level rises the WSR may not see its long lease run its full term as part of the line could be under water.

Its the issues over sea defences that discourage SCC from selling the freehold

Maybe in the future the MD - BA section could see the return of Volk's 'Daddy-Long-Legs' ?? :)

Having been asked earlier via PM i thought it worth answering the points in a public way . To the OP please note I answer the questions raised rather than ignoring them ...

1 - the moderators are unpaid
2 - we do not get "brownie" points for bouncing the thread or for being controversial
3 - yes we could state mod hat on/off to differentiate out own personal view from posts that are moderation guidance but hopefully in the main that is blindingly obvious
4 - whilst we could argue moderators should/could be impartial I suspect it may negate peoples willingness to volunteer and I again refer to answers 1 and 2

    so why my interest

I am fascinated by human behavior and more so by business behavior . the characteristics and personalities . Many years ago one former acquaintance took pot shots at me publicly . It eased me into digging a little deeper behind the public facade and some rumours that had been circulating . The results were fascinating and a far far darker character emerged from available material. Once factually demonstrated the pot shots turned into an own goal

the wsr has been fascinating for some years now . A dysfunctional set up with a mix of personalities with quite personal visions of the direction to go . even the removal of the EX6 didn't resolve matters and into the vacuum new characters emerged

What is interesting is from research and conversation you start to build up (as i did above) a picture . Preservation is very close knit and very few secrets remain secret . the stories that are shared from a persons perspective corroborate that from others . Delve into public records and an extra layer is added

so what does this have to do with the WSR ? I sit outside , with no real vested interest . Each action that you see take place is another step on a journey that when you look at the past and present gives you a vision of the future . in any unfolding drama there are , when you look back warning signs , and there are always though those who until the end refuse to believe them . there are even those who turn on the very people trying to warn them of what may happen .

so do we shout the warning , or sit back and let the drama unfold
