Looks like there is conflicting information on this, possibly related to whether or not passengers are carried?

You didn't misremember. I was on that train and found out a couple of days before that the train was going to consist of air conditioned stock because the necessary paperwork hadn't been sorted for Mk 1s to be used in a 90mph train. I guess that some special derogation was obtained for Bittern's run (as it was for Bittern itself) and as has been pointed out, Tornado's support coach is a Mk 1 as was buffet car used on the Ebor Flyer. It seems ages ago now, but the Ebor Flyer was to have been the first on a series of 90mph runs rather than a one-off special (or series) like 4464's runs. All that seems like another world now!

On the subject of Clerestory stock, although slightly at a tangent, I visited Australia for the one and only time in my life in 1987 and was staggered to find them still in regular use on some services out of Melbourne. I think they have finally been withdrawn now.

Still in use in 1997 in the more far-flung reaches of Canada..... (The Pas, Manitoba. Coach built in 1928 and used on the service to Lynn Lake)

There was a 1914 built clerestory coach in use on the Montreal area electric loco hauled service through the Mount Royal tunnel in 1991 as well (as I travelled in it!).
