Just to say, with moderator's hat on, that the person who goes by the name of @Dan Taylor on here is on our radar for all the reasons people have observed.

    Hello 'Big Al',

I received an email about a week ago that JJP, Chairman of the WSR, was allegedly exerting pressure on Nat Pres, via his minions if not directly, to suppress criticism of his leadership of the WSR.

That is 'by the by', but I think some kind of definitive statement from the Moderators as to their approach would be helpful, and rather more than that contained in your post 23061. I cannot myself see that 'Dan Taylor' has infringed any forum rules on here. You and other moderators allowed a campaign on here by The Reform Group a few years ago that often resulted in posts on here far more controversial than anything 'Dan Taylor' has posted on Nat Pres.

    Cheers,

    Julian

Maybe more controversial, but with far more substance behind them than "Dan's" textbook demonstration of what an internet troll is, and I'm therefore pleased to see that the moderators have noticed this. More decisive action would, I'm sure be welcomed by the forum (it's not just here he's sh1t-stirring) but that's not meant as a criticism of the moderating team, just a humble opinion.

Of course, we ought to be ignoring Dan [whose photo is of course the character Dan, played by Hugh Griffith in the Titfield Thunderbolt] but if we do not 'out' him the risk is that other followers of NP will take him seriously.

    Two points.
    1. If your comment is 'by the by' why have you bothered to mention it?
    2. As for what you are alleging might be going on, as I'm part of the team then I presume you are expecting me to know what on earth you are talking about?

Maybe it's high time that this thread refocused on the day to day work of the railway as the other threads with a similar name do. Subject to forum rules of course. Anything else has no real place on here and should be confined to private emails.

Well, 'Big Al', I do rather expect you to know what on earth I am talking about!

Provide us with a proper statement of the moderators' position on all of this. That is surely not an unreasonable request?

    Cheers,

    Julian

Well others have said it. Basically mate, hop along! I put many voluntary hours into producing the journal and many people do send me very worthwhile contributions.
On a happier note, I was present today when the WSSRT presented a cheque for £35000 to the plc chairman. That money was raised by the trust by quiet, under the radar, without fuss endeavour. I have also today ordered a reprint of our "Tales of the WSR" book. The original print run of 800 copies has sold out. This book was produced completely by voluntary effort and all profit went directly to support the railway. Some of us just get on and do it and well done too!

Was there ever something similar to the Stogumber cattle dock at Crowcombe Heathfield? By the bridge Minehead side.

I don’t understand why you seem to have it in for JJP ( perhaps I should add “allegedly”).

I found when I made a direct approach he was open, courteous and helpful. Maybe you should try it.

    "
It would be interesting to know the axle loadings of 9351. My guess though, extrapolating from the difference in weight between 5100 and 3150s, is that its a few cwt shy of getting into the yellow weight restriction. A yellow restricted 2-6-0 would have been a more capable, if rather more expensive, alternative to the 2251 as a branch line engine, and also a more modern alternative to the Dukedogs. That in turn would have meant that the 2251 could have been built with a P class boiler, hopefully putting it in the uncoloured group and making it a replacement for all the Dean Goods. "

    Anybody know ?

There was a siding used to load stone from the local quarries. The wagon on the down platform is an example of the type which brought the stone to the station.

    9351.

In most respects 9351 is very similar to a 93xx Collet mogul as later modified in BR days by removing the heavy front balance weight behind the front buffer beam and renumbered as a 7322 class.

The most significant difference being that 9351 is fitted with a GWR standard 2 boiler and the 7322 class has a larger GWR standard 4 boiler.

The weight diagram for a 7322 class gives the following axle loads (Red route):-

    Pony. 10T 5C
    Leading. 17T 17C
    Driving. 17T 17C
    Trailing. 17T 18C

The boiler weights book gives the following:-

GWR std 2 boiler with 2.5" water in the glass 16T 15C 3Q (900 gallons of water).
GWR std 4 boiler with 2.5" water in the glass 19T 15C 2Q 7Lb (1130 gallons of water).

    The difference being 3T.

The reduction in boiler weight effectively makes 9351 3T lighter than a 7322 class, and the weight reduction is slightly more at the rear than at the front. Estimated weights for 9351 becoming (Blue route-just):-

    Pony. 10T 0C
    Leading. 17T 12C
    Driving. 16T 17C
    Trailing. 16T 8C

I do not have the as built measured weights to hand but they were similar.
To try and estimate 9351's weights based upon the removal of tanks, bunker etc is not easy as the removal of the radial truck has a big effect. In practice the adhesive weight of 9351 is less than a 5101 class with full water tanks, but greater than a 5101 class with half full tanks.

There is no way that a "standard parts" Churchward 2-6-0 with a standard 2 boiler could have easily been made light enough to get down to Yellow route weights.

If I am able to obtain the "as built" weights of 9351 I will add them as an edit.

    Andy.

IIRC, the Cambrian Railways had toyed with the idea of a 2-6-0, and even produced drawings. As much of their routes were 'Yellow' or less, then maybe there was scope in the Swindon drawing office to create such a loco.

David Andrews in his book on the Churchward 2-6-0s includes details of "proposed light 2-6-0s"

Appendix V "Proposed light 2-6-0 with No.2 boiler " gives following weights:
    Pony 10t. 5 cwt. ( with buffer beam weight 11t 0cwt )
    Front coupled 16t 16cwt ( 17t 10 cwt )
    Centre coupled 16t 18cwt (16t 15cwt )
    Rear coupled 16t 16cwt ( 16t 15cwt )

    Loco weight 60t 15cwt (61t 10cwt )

    Coupled wheelbase 14ft 9inch, 5ft 8inch dia wheels.
    Length over buffers 58ft 1inch. ( loco and 3500 gallon tender. )

The Swindon drawing is undated but believed to be 1926/7

    "with No.10 boiler "
    Pony 6t 10cwt
    Front coupled 13t 14cwt
    Centre coupled 13t 13cwt
    Rear coupled 13t 12 cwt

    Loco weight 47t 11cwt.

    Coupled wheelbase 12ft 6inch, wheel dia. 5ft 2inch.
    Length over buffers 55ft 4inch ( loco and 3000 gallon tender )
    Cylinder 17inch by 26inch.

I've been off line for a few days so I'm now catching up. Seeing no post on this thread since Saturday I thought it must have been closed.

But no, it seems everyone has just been taking a breather after another round of negativity.

The forum did play an important part in helping to sort out the WSRA politics, so I hope this thread can continue to cover the WSR in general, including the politics, with valid criticisms and questions about the management permitted, but with no encouragement for mere trolling.

The trouble with you hoping that "valid criticisms and questions about the management" will continue is that there is no arbiter on here of what is, or is not valid. Neither does that help the situation when the solutions should be found through the railway's membership, meetings and resolutions not the NP court room.

Here's a novel idea. Focus on the day to day work of the railway, just like every other thread on here. Then there is space for interesting diversions such as the recent info about 9351.

This thread is supposed to be about WSR operations not politics. Critisism & questions about the management of the railway have no real place here as discussing such things here is about as pointless as chatting about them in the pub. There are proper channels for dealing with any genuine issues of that nature but this forum & in particular this topic is not one of them.
