Surely it is if they can’t run on the mainline without it?

Indeed so and this may well prompt me to travel again with Steam Dreams for the first time in several years especially as it seems that this one will be the Duchess on her own.

I have to admit that does sound odd, as it was the reason it was failed last time wasn't it?

TPWS is obviously safety critical, the last time was OTMR and s problem with the reverser, maybe they have sorted out both

I have read very recently, maybe in Railway Herald that all of the mainline registered Loco Services steam fleet have been 'winterised' apart from 46100.

Yes indeed, but less likely than winning the lottery...?

Interesting - is that subject to seats being available or is standing allowed? I've only ever booked well in advance.

Even at this late stage I am looking forward to a non stop run from Woking to Salisbury tomorrow.

There is no reason why we cannot go main line soon after Woking rather than at Winchfield and slip out behind the Bournemouth service. But that would be too much of a Christmas present to hope for.

I guess it will depend whether SD / WCRC on-train staff are in touch with Control to "prompt" them to optimise the path, in the way that has happened for some special VT runs, or whether the NR signallers just let the charter follow the path set up for it in the computer without intervention.

From a line-sider's point-of-view, I hope you're a few minutes late and the footplate crew are doing a little extra to regain the lost time. An 8P working a train timed for a 5MT might otherwise just be cantering along ;-)

It is entirely feasible to repair faults.

This raises an interesting point - is the timing actually different, as there's to be no diesel for 6233, whereas 61306 would have had the diesel shove/back-up? Both are 75mph locos but I haven't compared the timings in detail.

Unlike normal trains standing is not allowed on charters. Which is really only fair for those that have paid to travel in comfort. Plus as window hanging is not allowed standing in an unheated vestibule would be a pretty uncomfortable way to spend a day in December.

Steam Dreams has just emailed folk telling them of the loco change and the 'subject to FTR plus NR checking Duchess weight restrictions west of Salisbury' caveat.

So we just hope that all turns out well. The fact that the PRCLT has agreed to provide a support crew is very much 'service beyond the call' in my view and something to be very grateful for.

This is much as I thought - thanks. However, I expect there are at least a few who wouldn't baulk at the discomfort!

Would Mayflower have had a DL on the back though? The hardest climb is the curving 1-in-80 Oborne bank between Sherborne and Milborne Port. So long as the load was planned to be within her cababilites there, there's no need for assistance except leaving Victoria, where we know that old fashioned banking/drop off is allowed. Given that there is a 0Zxx path in RTT for a DL from Vict to Southall and it's SD's 20th Anniversary, I suspect the train has been planned not to need assistance. Therefore, unless there's some outside interference, I expect 6233 will have a relatively easy task tomorrow.
