Whilst it was touched upon in the WSR thread, full report in SR suggests that poor old 7027 is looking for another new owner.

A rather mischievous cover! Showed an image of 7029 looking resplendent, adjacent to the strap line “Castle for sale?” in large letters, with much smaller reference that it was Thornbury being referred to - but if you don’t know your Castle numbers, no indication that the image didn’t relate to the headline!

Sad news. I never felt very confident in the new ownership. Has anything been done except the bogie overhaul? Surely an original, unrestored castle must be an attraction for someone with a bit of cash behind them. Better luck next time.

Hasn't been sold - the article says the owner is open to offers, which is not quite the same thing.

I'm not sure that the bogie overhaul has actually been completed. I think the tender chassis has also been started, but again I'm not sure that it has been completed.

To be fair to the owner of 7027 , he has been funding the overhaul of 4936 and has bought 9466 as well . Both the engines can earn their keep possibly at the WSR once track work is complete and are better suited to preserved line running . I have heard some quite substantial sums quoted to return 7027 to steam , and you have to admire any individual or group who put their hands in to their pockets so we can enjoy steam

sometimes a little dose of realism can do us all a world of good even when you are a wealthy loco owner .

Do Castles have gauging issues on the main line?

Very well then in answer to your pedantry - potentially yet another new owner

Not as much as the GWR 2 cylinder stuff is the short answer although you could argue all steam seems to suffer from gauging issues in this day and age.

Quite possibly yes, it could be that he’s waiting for the right offer. Reading between the lines, 6960 is staying at the SVR and 9466 is tied into a deal with the GWSR for next season, I’m guessing the WSR upgrade is going to be a while in the making which maybe a possible influence in any decision to sell, especially considering he also has 4936 to complete.

Personally I’d rather he sold it if it’s going to sit on the back burner for years on end if a buyer came forward who could offer a quicker restoration along with a long term plan for the locomotive.

Nevertheless a statement like that implies the restoration is on hold again. The previous owner was ‘open to offer’ for years.

6960 belongs to LSL, not JJP
