I would fully support PRCLT concerning no one else being allowed to drive. It's their loco that is costing them a lot of money to keep running and is a perfectly reasonable condition to apply however able the local crews might be. There are instances of visiting locos being damaged going way back.
Moving slightly away, how many of us are happy to let anyone drive our car particularly if it were a vintage or classic, never mind common modern one?

You may well find that that is contrary to the railway's written SMS. We have been through all this on the Moors in the recent past. Not only do you have to be assessed by the railway on your ability the drive a loco competently but you also have to know the rule book pertinent to that railway (they are not all the same) and the local operating practices. It's no different to operating on the national network really.

Let's take this away from the Bluebell as this conversation might otherwise get a bit difficult for no good reason.

If a main line locomotive visits a heritage railway, surely it would be the case that the detail of what is to happen would be agreed from the outset? And by that I mean whether the visit could be staffed from the available loco support team, whether the visit fits in with other work and what the arrangements for operating the loco would be on the heritage line. We now seem to be talking about not only a support team problem but also a proviso that PRCLT folk crew the loco.

I agree with @RalphW that loco owners are entitled to have a view about who operates their engine but I'd be surprised if this has just popped up over the Duchess visiting the Bluebell. Were it to go to the DSR or the WSR - neither of which are possible, I don't think, because of gauging issues, then the same issue would arise. Are there not local operating arrangements that apply to local crews otherwise WCR/DBC crews would continue with steam charters onto the DSR at Paignton. And with respect that would be more appropriate than a loco owner representative taking over.

As has been said already, I'm sure that passengers are pleased that this trip will run with steam even if it's not the original loco that was intended.

I wonder whose crews drove 6233 at the SVR gala last year? A class 40 was withdrawn from an earlier SVR gala after the owners had a fit of pique because it had to be crewed by the SVR so I would have thought the same applied to the Duchess at the SVR last year. If it was SVR crewed why can't it be Bluebell crewed?

I thought the support crew being on holiday was the reason it is not doing the SD tour. When it was at the Swanage Gala last year it appeared to be being looked after by its own support crew. I guess the same would apply at the Bluebell.

Actually, his profile says he's from "Des Moins" - no idea where that is. It also says he does not currently volunteer, but he may have spent x years previously doing so.

You may have missed that he is apparently 37 years old, but has also stated that he has 30 years experience. There does not seem to be a place called Des Moins but that could be a typo, omitting the 'e'. The inconsistences have piqued interest.

Hadn't missed that. Pretty careless, to say the least, to have a typo in a profile!

Seen running 7 late at Oxted. Time was lost in a short distance south of here and the train crawled over the bridge. Is there a NB TSR/steam restriction? Edit - photo won't upload at the moment after many attempts. I'm using a MacBookPro - is there a known issue here? The same problem has occurred many times before and eventually it accepts the upload.

Had to link to Flickr to do it, rather than be able to upload the photo alone.

I have found uploading images very hit and miss recently. Had about a month where it would only take one and week where it would not take any at all.

Thanks for the reassurance - I thought it was just me! Is it an issue to be raised with the 'management', do you think?

Yes, there is a 10mph over Oxted Viaduct Bridge 520 for any loco hauled train.

    Cheers, Neil

Passed through Chippenham at teatime 2 mins down; after a 1 L start at Bath.

Looked and sounded splendid at Chippenham on load 9 - well done all concerned. I see it was right time again at Wootton Bassett Jn; then dropped a few minutes following 1700 BTM Padd ex Swindon which was 4L (which was/did over took steam trip at Sdn as part of plan). Screen shot of my video attached.

    Regards
