    Curious ?? I can't understand that.
I've no idea how Carnforth (or any other operator) works, but I'm sure every possible situation (EVERY) is assessed and decisions made accordingly. I feel sure they don't send something out on hire and make it up as they go along.

Really? I find it difficult to think of any steam trip when half way through the journey back a diesel was attached as an unadvertised action. I call that curious - no more no less - although tbh, I'm not all that bothered. But this is a discussion forum and that's what we are doing.

Not quite the same but the Duchess trip to the WSR suddenly became a diesel return due to an alleged fire, yet a few days later with no significant rain all back to normal. Maybe just someone not wanting to take a risk in NR somewhere.

For starters, a few years back a 37 was called to York from Carnforth to bring a train back after NR insisted the 8 was not to go any further.
More recently 6233 came off at Carnforth and a diesel substituted because of operational reasons.
Also recently the 8 was taken off early at Hellifield instead of going on to Preston, so for whatever reason it does happen.
None of these were in the plan at the start of the respective tours.

Hence operational reasons are mentioned as a reason to change things.

Many thanks @Big Al and @RalphW . who would want to be a charter operator with so many variables in play .

I suspect the matter from a forum perspective is best parked .

As a diversion given suggestions the 8F is out of ticket where will you put your money for two weeks time ?

Given the tour's name, I'd rather like to see BIL in charge

I wouldn't bother, we are all aware of the regular (at every opportunity) insinuation to the suggestion of something awry with a WCRC tour.

Is she out of ticket, UK Steam suggests a new boiler cert was achieved in 2017?

My footage of a few railtours in action at the weekend. Includes a shot of 48151 trundling up the climb through Danzey with the return working. I hope you enjoy it :)

So on Sunday a Jubilee will have to start 11 coaches out of Stratford up to the canal bridge and then up a mile and a half of 1 in 75. Good news that it will be a dry day. I hope that things go well.

She'll be fine, there's a little dip just before the bottom of the hill, so should at least take 25/30 onto it !
