    Excellent.
Two Manors, two Panniers, the Mogul and the 7F. What's not to like?
I'm looking forward to the gala.

What's not to like? A diesel at a steam gala.

Steam ran at the WSR Diesel Gala back in June. What’s the difference?

I think that with finances the way they are at the moment we have to use our resources in the most efficient manner possible. If that means slipping a home fleet diesel in rather than hiring a steam guest we have to accept it.

Steam ran one round trip on the Thursday and one on the Sunday.

The difference is that Joe Public turning up at a steam railway and finding only diesels would not travel and revenue would be lost. The fact is that Joe Public does not share your rosy view of diesels.

So far 6 Steam and 1 diesel. Hardly a diesel takeover, at best it can only work one diagram.

What happens when a steam loco fails? Sub with a diesel and voila, a mixed traffic gala. NO THANKS.

I do not see much wrong with it. Could be argued it is the 7F that is the odd one out with no GW or BR (w) pedigree!

But in that situation what else do you suggest? Cancel the Gala?

I would suggest not getting into a position where more than one thunderbird diesel is needed, ie, having a diesel as a reserve but not as a starter.

The odd one out in the above list is 7018. It is a diesel at a STEAM gala.

But we don't even know what the diesel is doing yet!!! It could be in use for a number of reasons - the first SVR Autumn gala in 1993 featured no less than 17 steam engines in use over the weekend but also had the DMU on the roster for overnights (alongside steam) as an example, this being because it wasn't thought the demand would be enough for the steam service.

Other issue here is the WSR is limited by both suitable engines with the current weight restrictions. There is also the current financial position which I imagine means they have a limited budget to spend compared to previous years, privately I thought they might cancel it but they have decided to go ahead and I say credit to them. Still maintain that it's better than no gala.

I really don't understand why some get so worked up about a diesel at a gala, as long as it's advertised - and particularly when one loco out of seven.

Is the Great Dorset Steam Fair no longer a steam fair as it has a load of historic motor vehicles?!

Giving Newportonians a bad name with posts like this. I see no problem with D7018 being included, probably covering for 7802.

Oh dear. Sounds like you’re expecting a steam engine to fail. Even if there was a failure that still leaves 5 steam engines (based on current attendees). With the current restraints on the WSR the fact there is to be a gala is good news and deserves to be supported. I’ll certainly be there.

Ah, I see your argument. It's a bit like giving a stew including 14% of meat in it to a vegetarian - he would eat it if hungry enough.

Why is wanting a steam gala to be all steam giving Newportonians a bad name? If I bought 7 cups of tea but one turned out to be coffee I would complain as I hate coffee.

Cause it's quite childish really what you posting, it's a Hymek not a class 66! Just don't ride or take photos of it, probably won't do a lot anyway.

It's also more than a little pathetic that this individual is going off on one towards others because of their preferences. Even though I'm mainly a steam enthusiast, I most certainly wouldn't get all worked up over a diesel making an appearance at an event like this. Hymeks aren't exactly the worst diesels in my book either; I mean, they're better than the class 60s, class 70s and as previously pointed out, the class 66s. Colin, if you can't stand diesels at "steam" events, don't bother attending; you'll be the one who misses out on the action.

Another insult. I am not "going off on one" merely expressing an opinion, to which I am entitled. Just because you disagree doesn't warrant insults. For your information I will attend all 4 days and at the last ASG, when 7018 ran, I photographed it.
