It's showmanship for a market which expects the best possible image.
( No ducks were harmed in the production of the duck oil!)

So log attached for St Davids to Temple Meads in even time, despite the slow start (allowing time for the IET that we were following to clear Tivvy?) and the signal check at Worle Jn for another IET.

Whole climb from Cowley Bridge Jn to Whiteball (18.64 miles ave 1:305 @63.2 mph) worth an average 1,400 edhp.

The last 2.2 miles from Pugham (average 1:117 ) worth 1,685, so very similar to what was being produced on the way down at Semley and Crewkerne.

Fortunately I was on that tour Jeremy. A railtour that I shall never forget. Before we set off I was talking to the driver. Gerry Daniels approached and said to him ''Now you know what you have to do. If you're reported for speeding you'll have to report to me in my office on Monday morning'' …..and then he winked.

The 85 mph speed of the train was announced over the tannoy. My friend enjoyed the trip so much that he decided to travel again the next day. A speed of 93 mph was attained on the descent to Templecombe!!

    Sorry for thread drift. <BJ>

Thanks Sean. Just cruising really with lots in reserve . I think the figure for the final mile to Semley will be higher but I haven’t worked it out yet. 230 lbs of steam and 27 percent cut off, my highest speed there since 1964.

One last bit of "drift". At the time I calculated that CoW was doing 93 when she passed us and have often wondered if this was the preservation-era's highest speed with steam (Tornado doesn't count, it's not preserved!).

But all four would have to share the prize for the most stylish post WW2 steam loco. ;)

No, there's been at least two more. 46229 down Shap on its last run (Steam Railway said "we can't print the speed but if you send us £96 we'll tell you") and 60009 down Whitehall.

Add another £ for No.9. Missed that; but timed 46229 down Shap. High speed scribbling with sub 10 sec quarters. Also seem to remember 4498 'allegedly' going very close to CoW's speed 2 years earlier on a Blackmore Vale Express we did of 26/10/86.

Is the Belmond trip on Friday 16th steam-hauled, then? I had thought it was diesel, as shown on the UK Railtours site.
