But it does make them fit in perfectly with the rest of an ambitious recreation of something that had been lost. No-one is trying to pretend they are original...give us break, please!

Just for info, we deliberately bought a similar but non-GWR clock and had it lettered, on advice from someone who knows his clocks. It hangs in the public booking office and could easily be lifted off. We are not going to hang a £2500 clock there. It wasn't a money issue.

Indeed, and quite sensible too. In a similar vein P&O doesn't wear its own nameplates because they're far too valuable, even though I think the society does own one of the originals.

    Oh dear.

    Something like this for timetables?

Not at all. It's just the misleading lettering which is not good from the "heritage point of view. Genuinely old "wind up" clocks can be bought very cheaply provided they have no railway provenance and IMHO do not need anointing to look convincing.

I appreciate this reasoning completely and my only thoughts are that the ersatz inscription makes it more vulnerable to the attentions of the ignorant thief than had it been left alone. Everything depends upon circumstances. The railway clock I am most familiar with went away for cleaning last winter. It has an 84 inch case with a 22 inch dial and needed 4 people to remove it. Although in a public area sneak thieves are likely to be deterred by its sheer size

If you can convince the station staff to get the chalk out every morning be my guest, I won't hold my breath though... :)

I'm sorry Paul, but I'm really struggling with the concept that writing "Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway" - a name which has only existed since the 1980s - is really better from a heritage point of view.

We have, in preparation for Stogumber, thin ply boards to hang onto this timetable board for each standard timetable. They will then be signwritten for each year to represent chalk and so just require the correct one to be hung up each morning.

    Simples.

'Misleading' How? The lettering is carefully reproduced GWR.

    'Misleading' like the station building?

I'm sorry, but you do need to lighten up a bit.

Merely thought it would sweeten the pill. Much better for there to be no lettering
As Lady Bracknell didn't quite say "The font is immaterial." This was never a G.W.R. possession. It has been made to seem what it never was.

I did suggest similar to replace these, made up a year or two ago:

I didn't get much of a response at the time, perhaps you could share a picture or two when you've finished yours, might make a more convincing case? I think the one above probably displays more info than your board though, and I suspect any replacement will have to convey the same info.

I agree, what’s the situation with the L&B coaches as an example? Recreating the past is the aim there and surely this is the same?

Like the whole IoW station at Smallbrook Junction?

Well, like the little plaques on reproduction buildings which give the actual year, a clock with 'GWSR' will indicate subtly, to the cognoscenti, that it's not an original.

PS: I don't have a dog in this fight; any would be fine with me.

Doesn't pretend to be anything else although the signal cabin in fact served as a crossing box on the Ventnor West line.

    ‘Replica’ target signs?

And screwed to the fence rather than hanging or on lamp posts.

Very nicely presented in BR(S) style.

This is not a recreation of a previous building as there was none here before. Back to the issue of Broadway (or rather not as he issue has been exhausted)

So should this have been subtly labelled “Isle of Wight Steam Railway” rather than “Central”? After all, it was never an I.W.C.R. possession ...

You need to show some consistency: what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Why be so critical of the facsimile at Broadway but ignore Wootton? Had the IoWSR followed your advice, Wootton would never have been recreated in the form it currently has.
