Here is a view from earlier this year when the Boscastle chassis was out in the sunshine for the first time in several years.

I may have missed some detail along the way but a new authentic tender tank for WC : is this for the existing tender frames that I assume are from a MN or have tenders been swapped around so that 34039 will have a WC tank on WC frames?

The new tank will be going on the old frames (which are being extensively refurbished - new dragbox etc). I'm not sure how much difference there is between WC tender chassis and MN tender chassis.

Thanks for posting the link, Tom. On reading through I realised that the page needed a few updates which I have now made. Nick

thanks for the links - I had a link to a vintage carriage trust site that referenced tenders but seems the page has been removed.

5,100 gal. Tender No. 312?: This second series Merchant Navy tender is owned by the 34039 Boscastle group. It was borrowed by SLL for a period in 2002 when tender 3116 (35027) was damaged in a collision with Thomas. The tender is currently on loan for use with 34007 Wadebridge.

So if I've understood correctly, Boscastle's tender is from a MN (assume taken from another Bullied from Woodhams when purchased?) and over time has also been loaned to run with 35027 and 34007. These frames will now have a new WC pattern tank fitted.

I think 34039 & 35005 swapped tenders when both were running on the GCR (90s). So not the one it left Barry with. But yes, WC style tank on MN frames, and not being quite interested enough to read the above article, the summary as I understand it is that WC tender frames were flat topped (and thus more useful as ingot carriers which is what they were recycled as) and MN tender frames had a recess for additional water capacity.

They all look the same to me... ;-)

One thing I have always wondered about is did any of the Bulleid tender chassis' get saved once their use as ingot carriers was over, or were they just in too poor condition , I know some standard tender chassis were purchased by preservation groups , but i'm not sure if any others were

Many thanks for the updated link, newly bookmarked.
Does anyone know (straying somewhat here, sorry) if original pattern Bulleid tender wheels have been made where new build tenders have been necessary or have similar sized disc wheels been acquired? (I know 35006's tender has disc wheels but not sure of others)

Yes. Southern Locomotives have cast new BFB tender wheels. I think the Mid-Hants have also cast some, but I'm not sure if they used the SLL pattern or made their own

Didn’t one of them (35006??) use the carrying wheels from scrap Class 40 diesels?

That may be an urban myth; BR were very quick to cut up 40126 very quickly into very small pieces to avoid bits of it appearing on the market.

I do have old photographs showing three disc wheel sets with 35006 at Toddington but I'd obviously forgotten that they were sourced from a withdrawn class 40. If the doner had have been 40126, I'm pretty sure the wheel sets / bogies would have been different to the ones in use with D326 on that fateful occasion. :)
