A series of pictures taken at Southwood between Farnborough and Fleet yesterday morning is now on Flickr. I haven't had time to write any captions, but you'll know what you're looking at! This is the first one in the Photostream:

If them Southerners have damaged that smokebox door they'll never see it again once we get it back. BIL was in perfect nick when you lot got your hands on it and now look at it  C'mon, speak up, where did it happen and who was driving?........................;)

Even the smiley face doesn't disguise the fact that perhaps these ongoing remarks/jokes have gone far enough. I'm disappointed that BIL wasn't able to strut its stuff down here on its own otherwise I'd have been on one of its trips. The opportunity for it to roll by its birthplace was an event in itself and the ability of 10A to create something from nothing has to be admired. Wherever it goes, it'll doubtless be of value and a 8P at 10A will be a welcome addition to the fleet.

Pure nostalgia the last week. Sixty three years since I was standing on the platform at Raynes Park when this unfamiliar beast 35018 came through in rebuilt form. What's that? And sixty years since I had a trip on the ACE to Exmouth ( ie Sidmouth Jn) and back behind 35009 and 35020 (Mr Hooker's favourite).

An annual visit to the south---yes, makes sense. But also I'd like to see BIL given a real good go over Shap and the S and C now Messrs Rawling, Kelly, Smith, Blair and Chipperfield know the loco. So far, BIL has put up some very good performances without being extended. Given the restrictions, the only places where capability could really be shown is up the hills, be it Shap, Ais Gill or Honiton.

I agree they look right on BIL. Does that mean they are wrong on Clan Line? I have often suspected it.

Ye gods man, it's called banter, it's meant as a bit of fun, there's nothing serious to it.
Maybe you want to stop the banter now ?? If so, I will desist.

Well I for one saw your earlier post as harmless banter as signified by the smiley.
If it was up to me, you wouldn't get her back up north until I've had an unassisted run up Honiton Bank with her. :)

Sadly it looks as if something has gone wrong as there was a Southall -Carnforth working yesterday ,postponed till today and now showing on RTT as cancelled "due to a problem with a steam locomotive ".I believe it was BIL heading home.Let's hope it's soon sorted.

Given that any engine newly restored will include much metal replaced since the 1960's, I'm not clear what any performance measured with No18 actually proves which hasn't already been proven with say No28? Happy to be enlightened though.

61306 now seems to have a SD headboard on almost permanently on display plus as noted elsewhere the Saphos one. Just further evidence of the move away from the enthusiasts market to a more commercial model and irrelevant really when it cannot be seen by the customers.

I would suggest it is not necessarily the existing customers it is aimed at. It is amazing the number of times as a steward you get asked at a pick up or a water stop by passengers waiting for a service train "how do you find out about these tours?"

But not irrelevant when it is seen by the general public at every station, OK so it might upset a few photographers but so what.
