Just having a bit of fun. Lots of work with the DMU pit at Corfe and PW stuff going on. Must be something to do with that.

someone on on the Class 33 Facebook Group has said 'great news' due to steam shortage the Compton and the 26 would be operating on the turn including the 10.40 departure from Swanage up to the start of June. Describing a shortage of power is not what I call 'Great News'...

I guess it depends upon your point of view. If your primary interest is in seeing 33s running then I guess it is.

Diesel traction fans are in the minority of the general traveling public that pays the bills to keep the railway as a whole running. Not being able to run steam at all is proven to decrease business so shortage of motive power is overall bad news for the railway.

Thankfully I don't think the situation is so bad that that will be the case. Half term was planned to be a two steam train service. As it stands it's going to be a bit of unplanned mixed traction. Not so many years ago this would have been a Green timetable day with a Steam and a DMU diagram anyway. Not the end of the world but a it of a pain for the roster clerk as not all drivers are dual traction. Some crews will be a little disappointed, as will some passengers.

I believe the problem is caused by 30120s tender being stopped for inspection following its derailment last week and 31806 still being in Herston works receiving axelbox work. Hopefully both will be fit soon and the fleet will be back to strength before two train running starts in earnest for the summer holidays.

I watched the T9 tender being moved into the shed just before lunchtime yesterday whilst on the way back from the town.

Guess less risk building an interchange station rather than running steam trains over shared track to Ryde where if a steam train broke down it could cause problems?
For the Norden to Wareham shared track the emphasis rather than building a new interconnect station seems to be getting the refurbuished DMUs to be reliable, which is taking time?
Ideally eventually the 3rd platform at Wareham will become available for SR use, but looks like some electrical cabinets may need moving which could be tricky?

I see SWRs refurbuished 442s have also been delayed?

Hopefully the DMUs will be finished for 2020.
Good SWR are running the Saturday service and Railtours the 4TC Sunday service.

A lot of money is being spent here and elsewhere to relearn the old lesson that "heritage" and "public service" uses don't mix.

I see the first day is either severely limited or not happening at all due to a shortage of guards.

1L11 terminated at Yeovil Pen Mill due to no driver with Pen Mill-Weymouth route knowledge. 2O01 should run when a driver has booked on and travelled pass from Salisbury.

An interconnect at Worgret Junction was never really going to be a realistic option. It avoids some problems but comes with a host of its own. See discussion a couple of pages back. https://www.national-preservation.c...eneral-discussion.37847/page-131#post-2449931"
Although there is a hope to use the Wareham Up Bay one day, this wasn't really provided for in the resignalling scheme so will be quite a push to get NR to add in. I imagine eye wateringly expensive as well so the Wareham Swanage service will have to be really successful to warrant it. Instead the focus at Wareham at the time of re signaling was on accessing the Down sidings for which track and signaling alterations were made. The idea is that Services from Swanage would arrive in the Up platform then ECS to the up sidings to allow mainline trains to pass. Then emerge in to the Down platform to form the service to Swanage. There is room in the sidings for a run around loop 'off the juice' to facilitate a steam service if this is thought viable. Siding access should have been available several years ago but the signaling was installed with the presumption that the foot crossing would be closed. Due to strong ongoing public opposition the replacement foot bridge has never been built and the crossing remains open baring all access to the sidings. The consequence of this is that the SR Wareham service timetable is now very constrained to paths that can get on to and of off the main line in a single gap between up mainline trains AND mesh with the SR 40m Heritage peak timetable. With no runaround available (same issue prevents use of london end crossover) services need to be operated with a bidirectional unit or top and tailed. Top and Tail isn't really practical for every day operation and part of the cost problem with the 2017 service was the hiring in of two mainline locos.
Hopefully the DMUs will be back on SR metal later this year in time for SR to operate a service for 2020. And yes it seems that rolling stock overhaul delays are not uncommon on the big railway either.

What happens to the passengers who were on the Corfe service this morning? Will their ticket allow them to travel from Yeovil to Wareham or Weymouth on other scheduled services?

Even use of the down siding at Wareham would be useful. As it is the SW service is currently in sidings at Poole but I would assume that SR's operators license would preclude the use of this solution.

Mark 3 coaches (40 year old design) and REP traction motors (50 year old) so getting to be Heritage. Best units on the network
