And this is what the wagons looked like when they first arrived (sort of!).

Back to the wagons (just to show we fix things at NVR as well as breaking them, allegedly!).

Monday saw Tim, Phil & Steve attack a couple of the open wagons (Southern Open, BR Shock Hi-Bar) which are/were in serious need of attention. Both have had the floor removed and the Shock has had the frames cleaned and painted. Report on FB (photos below for those who don't partake): https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/974303662759608

These should hopefully be a quick turnaround and back out in the rake, and then we'll be trying to get the civils brakevan finished I think...

The BR "Shock" open wagons have a particular attraction for me: I used to see them being loaded with bricks when I was a kid. My brother used to load them when he had a summer job with LBC (London Brick Company). Being very little, I used to think that "Shock" meant you would get an electric shock if you touched them...

My brother told me that they were brought to/collected from the yards by 08s and presumably taken up to Fletton or Peterborough for onward dispatch.

    What did we learn today?

    1. It's much easier to change the wheel sets on a wagon when you have hydraulic jacks available
    and
    2. It's hard work hand shunting a vanfit and moving wheel sets around by hand.

Friday saw a solo effort by Jon wire brushing and painting the chassis end on one of the open wagons in for a quick refurb (sorry, don't know which one!).

Saturday saw a large team turn out at Overton to replace the wheel sets and axle boxes on Vanfit B778019, stranded there with condemned wheel sets due to severely scored journals. Tim, Steve, Phil, Neil, Stu & Josh were assisted by various guys from the team(s) based at Overton, especially welcome once their hydraulic jack power unit was coaxed in to life (several of us had a go at hand cranking it - it was better than any gym cardio workout!). As you can see from the photos, there may have been a slight leak on the hydraulic pump...

By the end of the day, both wheel sets and axle boxes had been replaced, the replacements having been serviced during the swap, and the brakes (which had been disconnected on a previous attempt to sort it) were lubricated, reconnected and adjusted, so not only should it now be fit to be brought back down to Wansford, but it has working handbrakes too.

The group now has oiling equipment suitable for servicing the wagons and we intend to take ownership of this task to help keep the running rake in good order - next time out is for a freight experience with Repton on March 11th - places going quick I'm told!

Oh, and some monstrous great green thing kept chuffing past every now and again :)

Still a few places available on the Southern Freight Experience with Southern Schools Class 926 Repton, Monday 11th March.

150 quid for a half day, two round trips, two sessions on footplate with opportunity to drive and fire (each half day has 8 participants, so you rotate turns on the footplate - should total at least half hour on footplate). Ride in the brake van on a loose coupled freight when not on the footplate.

Refreshments included - breakfast bap for morning participants, light lunch for afternoon participants. Space for one guest to ride with you in brake van.

Very useful to have that powered hydraulic jack unit! It looked like the old axle boxes were 10" x 5" ? and were replaced by the BR std type...Were they a straight swap?

The hydraulic jacks were great - although the first lift had to be done bit by bit, swapping the hoses to change jacks and direction, due to an issue on the control unit. The Overton guys managed to sort the control unit while we were swapping the first wheel set, and the second lift was much easier with both jacks operating at the same time. Much easier than last time when we jacked two wagons by hand (packing and jacking as needed) to swap wheel sets over.

And yes, the wheel sets were a straight swap, despite the different axle boxes. Sadly the van is still stuck at Overton having failed an FTR due to a buffer issue :( We tried....

This weekend will see the Wagon Group sales stand in action during the Southern Gala. Tim has produced resin replicas of various wagon D-plates and a stack of 35A shed plates which will be for sale to help raise funds for the group.

I believe the sales stand will be operating from the Banana Van in the platform.

More wagon work at NVR on Good Friday (although sadly Josh and I were unable to help as I was driving at AEMR):

    https://www.facebook.com/nvrwagongroup/posts/1016734095183231

Neil, Steve and Tim cracked on with some Brake Van cladding and completed one door end and almost both sides. By close of play the BR Standard Brake Van was looking better than it has in years.

    bv1.jpg bv2.jpg bv3.jpg bv4.jpg

Phil and Colin have also been busy with the two opens over the past few weeks and they are also looking great.

Date for the diary - we hope to be running another Freight Experience day on 5th July with Pannier 6430 as motive power. Booking not yet online (I will update when it is), but should be 100 quid a head for a half day with approx 20 mins on the footplate and riding the brake vans on loose coupled freight when not on footplate. If we can squeeze four on the footplate then participants will get to drive and fire...

A concerted effort on Sunday, with Steve, Tim, Neil, Josh and myself onsite, saw the bulk of the cladding completed on the civils brake van. There's a few loose ends to sort, some metalwork to attach, and then the major outstanding work is to fit the new roof ply and canvas and paint it all...

Still waiting for the 5th July Freight Experience with the Pannier to go live on the website, but it should happen fairly soon (once Tim pulls his finger out and sorts the paperwork. Allegedly.)
