Surely you could also include the E4, the J17 and the J69, none of which I believe have steamed (or ever likely to unfortunately) in preservation.

    What about the Kirtley 2-4-0?

Be nice to get either that one or the GER 2-4-0 back in steam

The Kirtley 2-4-0 didn’t make it to BR service though - @steve’s contention was about classes that had been in BR service, had preserved examples but none of which had subsequently run in preservation.

I'm guessing @Steve meant locos of which more than one from the class survive. There are three 72xxs preserved, none of which have steamed. All other surviving ex-BR locos are the sole remaining examples.

I was really excluding the NRM collection as they were not acquired with any intention of being steamed. I was referring to locos that had been acquired to be used by the heritage movement, which essentially included those bought directly from BR, and those bought from Woodhams.
Tom's assertion about the GER 0-4-0STalso fitting the bill is, (pedantically;)) right, though.

It only narrowly missed working for BR, it was withdrawn in 1947. It hasn't steamed in preservation, correct. Another one I would like to see running again.

Oh, and let's have it black as LMS 20002!

Genuine BR J94 68077 spent many years stored in Oxenhope exhibition shed on the KWVR.

It was sold in 2005 & is currently in a dismantled state at the Spa Valley Railway.

Not sure if it has ever run on the KWVR, it may have been steamed on arrival perhaps but hasn't ever hauled any passenger trains as it wasn't vac brake fitted.

Has 68078 steamed in preservation? I can't find any details about either of them.

Mind you, who would have thought even 2-3 years ago that we could be seeing the T3 steam at Swanage in a few years' time? (Not that any further de-accessioning by the NRM is likely for the foreseeable future)

I've found a source which states that 68077 was steamed - briefly - at Keithley, shortly after arrival.

"It was bought for use on the Worth Valley Railway (now the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway) and arrived there in September 1971. It was steamed shortly after this but it required attention and the fitting of vacuum brakes before it could be utilised on passenger trains."

68078 Also is another forgotten loco, ( like many others based there) stripped down, and forgotten about at Selinge, last time I saw it , it was nothing more than a collection of parts, in a tarp tent and I don't ever recall anyone actually working on it

Is that the one the 35011 team had to move to get their loco out?

no that's another ex National coal board engine, 68078 is ,or was further down the site, behind where 35011 was

Last I heard, both the Austerities were in the tent, so it could be either. There is a small team that work on 68078, without big funding or backing. They are doing well considering what they have to work with. I believe the bottom end is nearly complete, and the boiler has had work, too.

Presumably 35025 Brocklebank Line would be included on this list....sadly!

By my account, these are the ex-BR locos either under restoration or unrestored and have yet to be steamed : (I am likely to have missed a few ) - happy for any corrections & omissions)

Both 42700 and 68846 have steamed in preservation. The former ran for a short time at the KWVR in the 70's. The latter, possibly the first B.R. loco to be privately preserved actually steamed to its first preservation home after the handover. It was also used on an early railtour to the Bluebell. In more recent years it was hired out by the NRM.
    Ray.
Edit 42500 also ran at Bressingham c.1970 and Gordon Highlander was one of the locos used on railtours by B.R. c.1960 - mainly in Scotland.

The question might be, firstly what locos might have a useful role if returned to service and secondly which ones are the most 'interesting' from a historical point of view - Gordon Highlander being the obvious example
