the idea is that many of them are holiday destinations.Attracting passengers was the aim. Clovelly may be small but has huge footfall for instance.

    Whooosh.

That is undoubtedly true, but I was describing how my schoolboy images of those places contrasted with the reality.

Try reading what I said, rather than what you think I said.

However, in my experience, the West Country has always been defined as the five traditional counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire.

That makes not selecting Swindon for a name something of a missed opportunity, ideal coat of arms as well.

I did read what you said. You were labouring under a misapprehension that the Class was named after major towns where in reality it was named after destinations in the West Country that passengers might visit and importantly might visit next year.
I can't see the point in being unpleasant about it.

Swindon is not Southern territory. This was a SR/BR initiative.

I guess that a search of historical records will establish how we got the list of names that we did and I'm sure that visitor possibilities will have featured highly rather than just a list of station names/destinations where the SR went - even though that is a strong thread running through most of the selection. Can't say that Eddystone works though as it's not a destination except perhaps for those who want a round sea trip out of Plymouth!

Since Swindon is not SR territory and nobody in their right mind would wish to holiday there anyway, the omission of that dump from SR naming policy is both understandable and to be applauded. :)

Does Space Corps Directive 723 relate to the situation?

    723. 'Terraformers are expressly forbidden from recreating Swindon. (Supplement 723/181 appends Nothing is to be named after Swindon under any circumstances)

Well I've been to Holsworthy as it happens and Blandford Forum has fine Roman remains so I believe from the TV.

Hi Al, with the greatest of respect, your book is wrong.
I can only point you in the direction of the well thumbed tomb that is Wikipedia.
    Type in 'The West Country'

Ah yes. Fair comment - it's just my view of the world. When does Central southern England become the West Country? Fortunately the SR planners didn't have that problem as where their railway went (or near where it went) gave them the steer and hence the list of names that we ended up with, some of which are very romantic. However, in the 1940s, the county of Hampshire was definitely the western limit beyond which the West Country was considered to commence, from a railway point of view. (And still is, I suggest.) That's why no locomotive was named Bournemouth or Andover. But localities in Dorset are, as you imply, a different matter and the SR just couldn't leave out their destinations at Swanage and Weymouth irrespective of the fact that they are really south coast resorts. Personally I am surprised that we never ended up with a loco named Poole given that it is also in Dorset and I recall at the time no train was allowed to pass through Poole without stopping.

Poole--- I was thinking that but given the oil leaks, perhaps better not. But if the seaside is allowed in Devon, why not Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door? Then there's Corfe Castle. There's just no rhyme or reason really.

Well the Gas Works Railway had no qualms about boundaries. The had already snaffled Corfe, Lulworth and Dorchester for their improved Dean goods, the Castle class

With the greatest of respect, and I have no idea whether it is you or Al who are correct, but Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and is not regarded as a reliable source.

To be honest, I agree with Al.
I live in Weymouth, but do not feel 'West Country'.
To me West Country is Cornwall and Devon.

And I'm definitely not trying to get any agreement over what we all mean as, after all, we are talking about a group of loco names that many folk have already said is a rather eclectic mix. That said, when my parents told me as a child that we were off to the West Country for our holidays, I was happy to accept that Sidmouth as a destination was just the place. I might have been less excited had it had turned out to be Swanage. For a start I would have missed out on a cream tea at the cafe that used to be at the top of Salcombe Hill.
