But where would the new spur come from? The trackbed beyond Mendip Vale has been obliterated by a huge industrial estate and a beyond that is a new housing estate. In the other direction the line beyond Cranmore is still in use by the quarry company.

The S&D at Midsomer Norton joining the East Somerset Railway on a spur? Impossible

There's an industrial estate on the site of Shepton Mallet S&D station, missing bridges on major roads either side of the station, and then you have the height difference between the two lines to somehow deal with.

In other words: yeah, it's impossible.

Not impossible, but so ridiculously implausible that it will never happen.

I guess we need an international measure of WIBN. The proposal to link these two lines could be established as 100 on the of WIBN scale.

You can relate the probability of this happening to the investment needed. Roughly 30 million pounds investment needed, that gives you roughly a 1 in 30 million chance of it happening.

The SI unit being a “Reeder”? In which case, I think we need to establish where 100 is on the scale, as this seems relatively sane and practical compared to some!

Let's not forget that some projects that were ridiculed as impossible subsequently did come to fruition. Duke of Gloucester is a prime example.

Now now - plenty of other people have had ridiculous ideas; there's no need to single one person out.

Having said that, I agree that compared to some of the S&D-related ideas that have been put forward over the years, this one is relatively sensible!

Surely if you were going to do anything it wouldn't be based on length overall. It would be a selection of length, scenery, location (ie not in the middle of nowhere) and good public connections if possible. Radstock to Chilcompton double tracked for me would be superb. From there I don't think there would be much ability to go any further, but in theory you may be able to get to the edge of Shepton Mallet. Then all you would need is this new link between the ESR and you have a mainline connection and a pretty long railway.......... I'll get my coat

Then all you need is a few quid to set it up, a few companies that don't mind relocating and several families that don't mind moving properties. :(

    Game on. <BJ>

Insert "million" before "quid" and that's probably perfectly true, including the companies and families moving if you pay them enough.

Naa just build a new line from the red point, new bridge across the A361, and embankment across the farm land and join the S&D at the A37..... Easy as......

I think I've said before on this thread, that when it comes to the S&D I can't even tell when people are being serious and when they are being sarcastic any more.

I wrote something a moment ago about the contours, but realised I had stupidly miscounted them. It would however involve a rather high and fairly long 50ft or so viaduct across the A361.

I'm 100% being sarcastic, but I get what you mean.
