The Atmospheric was very good while it ran. It was fast for its time, smooth and clean. The failure was in the technology : too much leakage from the vacuum pipes, which could be easily overcome with modern synthetics. In fact, there are several modern versions operating, albeit over short distances.

So it evidently does satisfy ORR as suitable for passenger trains.

I'm not sure they are too happy as it was the cause of at least one derailment in the recent past.

It's a optical illusion. The rail you see is actually the six-foot side rail, not the platform side rail. There's another rail (hard to see) nearer the platform. A dark line of weeds in between the two tracks gives the impression of a running rail but it's not!

  5. I agree the first one is a very fine pic - but it is not broad gauge ;)

The last one (the smaller one) - anyone spot what is approaching yet?

Ah, yes, now you've pointed it out I can just make out the actual running rails.

Ah, it was the wide spacing of the sleepers that fooled me.

West Somerset Railway - Then and Now

As a variation on the theme, a snap of the modified old Blue Anchor - Williton train staff brought back into use for the short period of running only to Watchet at the start of this season.

The Broad gauge display was refurbished with new signage under my tenure as SM at CH and has remained there. The other part of the fairly extensive track display was removed at the time and as far as I know the intention was that at some point in the future would form part of a museum display elsewhere on WSR.

Hopefully these beauties take the line to the left sometime this year and visit the WSR, diesel gala would be perfect.
