Agreed - a necessary addition for Scottish steam. It's not obvious whether there is enough track to park up a 10/11 coach train and also manoeuvre a steam loco away from the national network as that would almost also be a pre-requisite.

Devoid reopening P8/9 with a full run around loop its going to be a push/pull job back down the Deeside headshunt with the coaches stored in Clayhills. That's my best guess.

Clayhills holds LNER HST sets so should be long enough.

Loco's themselves can be stored at Ferryhill or Clayhills.

The bigger problem I fear will be space. Clayhills has been a busy place of late.

That makes sense...in which case this will mean that all trips to Aberdeen may take a diesel with them to shunt the train as the limited number of paths will not allow for a separate shadowing diesel that would add to costs anyway.

Perhaps now is the time to give a 'heads up' warning to those for whom this will be a less than ideal arrangement?

I would like to think the tour operators have looked at the Aberdeen station layout and drawn their own conclusions. They must be speaking to NR already, surely?

I would also like to think NR are getting serious about re-opening platform 8/9 generally.

Northbound capacity is already a serious enough issue on its own to merit this. There is a Morning rush on 6/7 with movements of the sleeper and the Inverurie/Dyce/Inverness service.

Railtours coming up further strengthen the case.

As for taking a Diesel, without permission to use the Sleeper service loco that is stabled there daily or the one WCRC sometimes leave stabled in Platform 1 for the Royal Scotsman then yes, taking your own seems logical. Aberdeen has long since lost its 08.

Then again an 08 could easily be stabled at Ferryhill now to facilitate Stock movements... contingent on all the required permissions etc

A diesel on the back is a penalty on the Aberdeen run due to the gradients and the curves. But then again it might be prudent to give some insurance...
