The US Boiler Code calls for a full retube after 1472 service days or 15 years following the boiler test that granted certification, whichever comes first. This means that a full internal examination is conducted at these 'service intervals.'

A service day is defined as "any day the locomotive has steam pressure above atmospheric pressure and a fire in the firebox.''

The more I follow the restoration, the more I am getting drawn into actually going over to see the proceedings.

My late father was a huge fan of USA Steam, had seen the UP Steam shops, 3985, 844, and called UK steam, toy trains in comparison.

Unwittingly in 2013, we went past UP4014's resting place, on a tour of California, little to know I would take such a strong interest in her restoration.

I did not know she was in Ponoma, did not catch glimpse of her from the Interstate etc....

Now, I have checked out flights from Heathrow to Salt Lake City (100 miles away), £480 return 1 week stay, Car Hire is £300, food digs etc..., and I am thinking it would be a great way to honour my late father, by actually being able to see her 4014, and 844 at promitory point, re-enacting the golden spike ceremony.

10 years after he passed away, it just seems the right the something he would never have expected to see the mainline again.

    Decisions... Decisions....

I think you have just talked yourself into going over for it. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Do please report back to Nat Pres to let us know first hand how the event goes.

Sounds like a decision with only one option to me...

I'd go, because it sounds like if you don't it'll gnaw away at you later that "I could have gone to that..." Events like that don't come round every week.

Go for it, Salt Lake City and the Rockies are worth visiting anyway. By the way 4014 and 844 won't be able to re-create the golden spike ceremony at Promintory as the line has been diverted away from there, they do however have some track there on the old formation with replica locomotives performing re-enactments.
Would you mind saying where you found the flight price of £480?

Price has increased, however I now fly from Newcastle - Heathrow inclusive £602.00, on Cheapflights.

The flight direct from Heathrow to SLC, is now over £833, might they be expecting it to be busy???

Oh boy, how true. I could have gone to London Transport's 'End of Steam' bash at Neasden back in the early 70's, but .... like a pillock .... didn't. :(

My considered advice is this: It's your life and you only get one go at it (unless our Hindu cousins are right!), so if you're inclined and it's humanly possible ...... go for it. Life's too damned short for regrets. Here endeth the lesson. ;)

I spend several months a year in Idaho (the next state) and have visited the Ogden area several times. The Utah state railroad museum is based in Ogden Union Station and has a selection of diesels and FEF4 # 838 (844's sister) and a U.P 0-6-0 switcher on display. Unfortunately the museum is currently under threat from developers and the website appears to be down. At the other end of the platform a group are restoring 3'g. D&RGW C16 #223. The Golden Spike National Monument is always worth a visit and the two replica 4-4-0's are steamed daily to re-enact the spike ceremony. If you have time make a side trip to the Heber Valley R.R. https://hebervalleyrr.org/ less than 2 hours north of Ogden. Trains have been diesel hauled in recent years as both the 'working' locos (U.P. 2-8-0 #618 and G.W. 2-8-0 #75) have been under overhauls which have overrun.
Which airline is flying direct LHR - SLC? Have a great trip.
    Ray.

Won't be railway related, SLC always has religious traffic, recall tremendous Challenger trips there in '94.
The Promentory replicas are now historic themselves and worth the long drive out, distances are vast but give repeat opportunities.

Virgin go direct from LHR every day, my price is based on a change in either Detroit or Atlanta.

Thanks for the info. Direct flights are actually operated by Delta so always worth checking their website and Virgins as they often have better or similar deals to the so called cheap flight websites.

Received this message from U.P. yesterday re 4014/844 tour schedule for the rest of 2019:
    Steam Tour Schedule Release Delayed

We originally planned to release the Big Boy No. 4014 and Living Legend No. 844 tour schedules earlier this month. However, details concerning the route and schedule are still being worked out. Once the schedule is finalized, UP Steam Club members will be the first to receive this information.

We thank you for your patience.
